A list of notable sports deaths in 2010 (watch videos of some on the list)

** mod comment: the videos aren't of the actual deaths, but "short tribute clips". Unfortunately DAOTEC has a habit of making these links sound more dramatic and morbid than they really are, but it's the tone of these threads that surround the deaths of people and loved ones in a voyeuristic and sensationalist mantle that has been deemed inappropriate by the site owners. For that reason this thread is now closed.**.

Which one was a shocker or very special for you on the list, and please feel free to add if you know any missing ...

Mine was: 25-year-old dual Olympic gold medalist [Natalia-Lavrova]
Rhythmic_Gymnast.jpg

The tragic news about Lavrova’s death shocked not just gymnastics, but the world. Natalia, 25, along with her younger sister Rossiy,a who was 24 years old, and the one who was driving collided with another car when her car skidded in the road and into the incoming lane, throwing them off the road, and then her car burst into flames. The terrible accident happened on a highway near her hometown of Penza Oblast, southwest of Russia. Police reports said Natalia and Rossiya died instantly.

I love reading about what I consider baseball's golden era from 1946-56 so was sad to hear about Bobby Branca and Bob Feller.
Anyone else notice how many young or relatively young football players on the list? What a loathsome sport that is.

I was so sad to read that "Coach" John Wooden, and Ron "Pizza" Santo died in 2010.

It is almost as sad that a classless coach like the UConn Women's B-Ball coach now holds Coach Wooden's consecutive wins record in NCAA Div. 1 b-ball.

Sorry guys.

We have no problem honouring fallen cyclists, ds's, mechanics, etc as they happen. But we just closed down a thread that had slipped from tasteful tributes or informative warnings into morbid voyeurism. This one is starting off the same way.

The "watch the video here" tone (wherever it links to) has been deemed to be inappropriate by the site owners. That will be enforced from now on.

Which leaves plenty of room for tasteful tributes. Do not hesitate to make any of those.
