Since this thread is back, after 1 and a half years, one point ill make about Lemond is that im disapointed that he didnt win the Giro or Vuelta. Lance obviously is most to blame for the "tour only" mentality, having ignored the Giro every year and claimed its all about the Tour, but if you look at Gregs era, before and after, every tour winner really went for the giro or Vuelta and won, apart from him.

Fignon won a giro and got screwed out of one, Hinault won 3 and 2 vueltas, Roche won the double

Zoetemelk won the Vuelta, and Delgado did twice. Even if you look after Lemond, Indurain won it twice, Ullrich won the Vuelta, Pantani the Giro.

So with the exceptiuon of the one off Bjarne Riis, one time winner, you have a long period of Tour de France winners, all of who actually saw Grand Tours as being more than just the Tour, apart from the 2 protagonists of this poll.

Perhaps if Lemond hadnt been shot, he would have won the giro, and if you look at his early years, he did well in it then, and unlike armstrong he actually went for the worlds. Looking at his re****s he did do a lot of other races before his accident, so pre 1989 Lemond is the upstanding more than the Tour cyclist i like.

But once he came back he was definately strong enough to win a Vuelta or a Giro. And he didnt try. 104th at the Giro before a comfortable tour win.:(

Cycling is more than the Tour and the worlds.

Greg is a 3 time world champion to Lance's single title. But if we are saying that both of them focused on the Tour as their primary objective...Lance is the better and more dominant of the two.

When I look at their careers in overall terms the thing that strikes me is that Lemond had a far less narrow focus than Armstrong. True there were changes to the calendar that may skew things, in particular the Worlds but that's a poor excuse on Armstrong's part IMO.

When you compare their early careers you cannot but wonder what Lemond might have done had he not been shot when he was. He was defending Tour champion and didn't get the chance to actually start with the number 1 on his back until 4 years later. What if.......?

All wins are not equal.

7 Tours is undeniably an astonishing achievement but A Tour de Trump win is not really in the same league as a Dauphine, Tour de L'Avenir or the Coors for that matter.

Armstrong will always be the best Tour rider of all time due to his 7 wins. He can never be anything more as he never really gave the rest of the season any real attention from 98 onwards.

Lemond was the more complete rider in that he rode a fuller season while targeting the GT's. As a previous poster pointed out, there are plenty of pics of Lemond in the fray in Flanders & Roubaix, yet barely any of Armstrong.

My first memory of Lemond is not the Tour but the Giro di Lombardia in 83. He was reigning WC and in line to win the Super Prestige Pernod which was the season long competition. Kelly won the race and Lemond won the classification.

Specialization started to kick in around the time Lemond was on the twilight of his career. You just can't compare them to each other.

Sure Ullrich won the Vuelta and the Tour, but the only reason he started the Vuelta was because he didn't ride the Tour. Indurain was just a freak of nature and totally beats Armstrong's career because he did the Giro-Tour double twice.

Winning the worlds, 2 dauphines, a Tour of Suisse, 7 Tours with 22(?) stages is just more impressive than 3 Tours and 2 Worlds. Lemond was shot? Well Lance had cancer, so he also missed a year or 2 of his career. Plus let's be honest here, Lance would have won in 2006 had he not retired. I'm not so sure about 2007 or 2008, but changes are high he could've also won those editions.

And well, I think I'm pretty objective here since I'm certainly not an Armstrong fan.

nothing to do with issues or hatred ElPistolero. Like the majority, I reviewed the intrinsic, circumstantial and real evidence with the race results. After the basic maths, I voted accordingly ie Greg LeMond is the clear winner. As a bonus, Greg has credibility and ethics.

cheers to all

If we are looking at hard cold results excluding extunating cicrumstances, then Armstrong takes it.

If we take potential talent, ethics etc into account, then probably LeMond.

How about pre-gunshot LeMond v post cancer era Lance, despite tht 7 Tours, early career LeMond was the better cyclist.

Yeah its not his fault he didn't have the competition Greg did, Gregs margin of victory would back that up. But according to the poll so far 60 percent feel Greg is better to 40 for Lance. So i imagine there are alot of other people who think it is comparable to win less tours against tougher competition than blowing away a field more often that only has two previous TDF winners.
I think the poll was a great idea, while it doesn't prove who was best it does prove people have different opinions on them and it is arguable which side of the debate is correct.
:D

My guess is the poll reflects the value people put on blatant, systemic cheating and outright fraud. Not a lot.

This has already been discussed ad nauseum (literally every single forum on the internet). If it is to be re-gurgitated once again it belongs in the "clinic" section.

One can conclude Lemond was a far greater natural cycling 'freak' than "lance" but Lance was heavily 'jacked' and more than made up for it in Grand Tours.

Sorry Lance never was "jacked, fueled, doped what have you".

Simply lazerlike focus enhanced by his survival from cancer, windmillike pedalling style, plane to fly instead of ground transport etc. 7XTdF winner, greatest TdF rider ever. Other than that, if
Greg and Lance went head to head, I think Greg would be superior in hard cobble classics with his uber strong slow powerful cadence, doubtfully he could be close to my Lance in TTs, but in long mountainous tour climbs my Lance woul have smoked Greg. It is about quality teamwork, usps discovery but most of all the high cadence. Greg was DQd in our local crit for using senior gearing at 16. He was an ultra strong rider but a gear pusher like Ulrich. If you want to have a long career and be an ultra successful climber these days you need to spin. I think LeMond didn't get that he probably would have had more wins and a longer career with windmill like pedaling. Same with Ulrich, struggelling in giant gear ratios both. Career shortening.

From the clues and circumstancial evidences we can safely say that Lemond was much cleaner than Armstrong.
The first were a freak in his prime time when the second became a freak with Ferrari's tuning!

it is Christmas pou pou, have a slog O' eggnog and enjoy my Lances victories, He was the most exciting rider, like Merckx, Hinault, Coppi. Please do not be jealous and bitter towards Lance it is a sad way to be.

Looking back at all these old threads, its funny to see how many Lance muppsts we had around here. Well, it was predicted they would all disappear with Lance and indeed most of them have, apart from flicker, Polish & Cobblestoned who is relatively new.

Not much sense in bothering with these posters anymore as they have moved on to something else by now.

for me both of them are legends of the sport i love.
regarding lemond,he's just like many grandfathers out there, sick of dementia, piszing and shiiting himself but still he's our grandfather and we love him no matter what.

I bet many of the forumites voting "For" Greg are really voting "Against" Lance.
Too young to remember Greg even riding....

Heck, I think if there were a poll - Lance vs PeeWee in the CN forum,
PeeWee would win because of the Anti Lance minions. Its true.
