I sent a PM to 180 about closing that thread. I ask you all to do the same. It is perfectly natural for men to want to look at attractive women, and these women had bikes with them. I realize PC rules dictate that men act like women, but those who call for such things are morons. You don't like that thread, don't freaking open it. But there was nothing improper about the pictures there, and making an arbitrary cut-off because someone decided it was "enough" is done with no clear reason other than it is obvious that some moderators didn't like the thread for personal reasons. Now that it is closed, it will slowly move its way to back pages with no way to bump it. That was a stupid decision. Absolutely freaking stupid.

I closed the thread

I have long struggled with the appropriateness of this thread on a cycling forum. And by appropriate I mean that most of the content had little or nothing to do with cycling.

I know not everyone agrees with this.

I made it clear to other Admin/Mods that if someone wanted to re-open the thread I wouldn't close it down again. I also accept that I will get a certain amount of 'feedback' about this.

Happy to discuss as required

Terry

Thanks for discussing, Terry. I hadn't visited that thread in a long time but I flipped through the last several pages and didn't see anything on or over the line of good taste. It may or may not be road cycling related, but if it doesn't fit in that category it would work in the Cafe. IMO there is nothing there that would reflect badly on CN or Future Pub. Of course I don't know how many complaints you mods received, but 800,000+ views suggests there were either a lot of fans, or a lot of people who really, really, really had to convince themselves it was inappropriate.

The thread had gone to the PG realm, I guess they wanted more skin like before?

The view count going up was probably from those where were offended, they felt the need to be offended even more than the first time they were offended, or they kept checking to see if they were still offended.

Maybe if we delay our next post by 10 minutes we can mount a protest :D or come up with a sticker :p

Why?

Or is that your reasoning? I guess I just don't understand why it's such a big deal that we need to start a PM-sending campaign. As 180 said, it's a cycling forum and there are plenty of other places to post/look at semi-nude pictures of females on the internet. Why is it so important to have another place here?

it's not important it's just fun.Thats why it doesn't need to be shut down.

Well I didnt open the thread (as Babes on Bikes dont really do it for me) and am not usually too offended by these things so certainly didnt complain - but in general I agree with 180mmcrank - its not really appropriate for a cycling forum.

I come here to talk about cycling .... if I wanted to ogle woemn (or in my case men) on bikes or on anything else I would try a different place.

Thanks Terry :)

Yup, I opened the 800,000+ thread to see what the fun and hoopla was about...

Nothing serious. Just about men appreciating beautiful women with bikes. Nothing wrong with that. The women were always gorgeous, and some of the candids and poseurs were humorous, but I didn't find any of it offensive.

I enjoyed the BOB thread as it added to the personality of the CN forum the way some of the other non-cycling threads like Beer, Music, Cuisine, etc does. Sure, I can go to a cooking site to look at food pics, but it's nice to have a look at what Krebs is cooking up after I visit the Clinic. I'm sorry to see the thread go. Sorry guys.

Shouldn't you have discussed it first, both with other Admin/Mods and with the users, instead of closing it suddenly?

It was in the General section...where topics such as that are supposed to go. There were bikes...and women. Stupid decision. (Hey, that rhymes. Maybe I will write a rap song?)

Bro, HILARIOUS!!!

I see my letter writing campaign has not swayed the moderators nor many of you. Suck it you bunch of hippie do-gooders!

Are you going to shut down the Cafe as well, then? I guess consistency isn't a puritan aspiration.

P.S. This is coming from a member of the gender with less in their pants (but more in their shirt).

You didn't open the thread. What other threads haven't you opened? We'll close them down too - let's start with the Cafe; it isn't cycling related.

Censorship...it's really bad news.

Why do people have such a problem with intraspecies attraction? It's not dead babies. Is the issue in 180's mind one of exploitation? Can one person speak for all those models?

I know not everyone agrees with this.

There are countless things on this forum that have nothing to do with cycling. The Babes on bike thread had more to do with cycling than the majoral candidate for toronto, or the recipe thread, or the politics thread, or the films thread. I really dont see it as an issue.

MOre importantly it was a restricted area in that any photos of babes on bikes went in that thread. If there was anything offensive it was easy to find and delete. All that will happen now is spatterings of pictures of female cyclists will start appearing all over the forum. For example, is it ok to start a Nicky Gudex thread in the road section to discuss her, or a liz hatch thread. It will just shift the issue from a controlled enviroment to an uncontrolled enviroment.

Completely over the top in my opinion. Are you now going to shut the "who has the best podium girls thread"

Trouble is Terry, by not discussing it with the other mods you have put them and yourself in a very awkward position. On one hand they need to be seen to support your decision regardless of wether they agree with it or not, On the other hand, if they disagree with your closing of the topic and re-open it it makes things a bit awkward for you. Honestly by not discussing it with the other mods I think a bit of an awkward situation has been created.

Personally for what its worth, If i was a moderator I would back you up. Not because I agree with the decision, but i do think mods should support each other. Bit like at work, if one of my staff id's someone for alcohol who I thought was clearly about 23-24, once that staff member had asked for ID and the customer didnt have it, regardless of my opinion i would back the staff member and not overrule them.

To be honest i think the BoB thread has done wonders for womens cycling on this forum. Most of the posters here wouldnt even know who Vicky Pendleton or Nicky Gudex were if not for that thread.

I don't really see a problem with a thread like that.

Most other sports message boards I go on have a thread like it relating to whichever sport it is. If you want to look you can or if you don't want to look you don't have to.

I agree, and very well said. I disagree completely with closing the thread, and if I were a moderator (yes, I know that will never happen) I would still back him up also. Terry put the other mods in a no-win situation.

I vow to start another thread in the Cafe when I get the time. Gotta study now though.

I can do without the soft-porn-plastic-bimbos posing with a bike close by. On the other hand I appreciate the athletic accomplishments, and beauty of women cyclists. And sometimes I think maybe they could have a future in the sport too.

Way to know your audience CN. The single most popular thread on the board and you close it down due to some prudish notions? Really, it's okay, it's just women and their bikes, it's not the coming of Satan or whatever moral quarrel you have with it.

a voice of reason your a female you dont seem to care about a thread you can choose or choose not to view but a male shut it down weird world we live in lol.

Hmm, BoB is closed due to little to do with cycling, yet we have threads on politics, whether you like coffee or tea, the types of beer you like, etc. I don't think those threads should be closed, I just think it is funny that this thread, which is clearly pretty popular, has been closed due to one person's, or perhaps a few folks, sensibilities being upset.

FWIW, for me it was always a fun thread to have a quick peek through. Not the least reason because it tended to be free of fanboy-isms and therefore, silly debates!
