The course in Bergen will be hilly, but not to difficult (at least that is what they tin for now).

I would have loved to see Bogota get it, but Bergen shouldnt be too bad either.

yep, ~10°C, chance of snow, should be good.

It is around 15 degrees there now, so that shouldnt be that bad.

Bogota is gunning for 2018 now :)!

It's high time we had a climbers' world championships route again. We've been a bit heavy on the flattish courses that basically guarantee a sprinter the rainbow bands without balancing it out with something for the little angels that fly up the mountains.

Last year was also for the sprinters?

2011 was, 2012 was made for an uphill sprint, which is also terrible, cause there's no action until the last 3km. This year has a big chance for sprinters, 2015 is easy and 2016 is pan flat.

So yeah

I know this was already settled before the thread even got started, but does anyone know why Melbourne was even running? They had it in 2010, and I'd say seven years is a bit too often.
Actually, I'd say it's in Europe a bit too often, looking at the locations from 2000 and up to 2017 (because I can't really go any further):

2000
France

2001
Portugal

2002
Belgium

2003
Canada

2004
Italy

2005
Spain

2006
Austria

2007
Germany

2008
Italy

2009
Switzerland

2010
Australia

2011
Denmark

2012
Netherlands

2013
Italy

2014
Spain

2015
USA

2016
Qatar

2017
Norway

So, in 17 years only four World Championships were/will be held outside of Europe.
I know it also has to do with what countries apply, so if Italy applies every five-or-so year they'll get it more often than a country like, say, North Korea, who are... pretty unlikely to apply.

Verona was the venue in 1999 and 2004. Exact same route I seem to recall.

99-98-97-96-94-93-92-91 were in Europe as well.

Unless Bárðarbunga goes off and we get a proper Fimbulwinter the chances of snow and below zero degrees should be very slim. Rain and wind on the other hand....

yeh, I had a look at the stats earlier on, ~3% chance of snow in the end of September (but probably at nighttime)

It was actually held in Geelong. Started in Melbourne briefly, but the circuit was in another city. Having said that, it is very close. Melbourne itself wouldn't really have an interesting or hard course, you'd have to go into the alpine areas to get variation of the hard stuff.

Theres a group called the Hells 500 who is behind this everesting craze who could probably design a nice hard course, they've got most of Melbourne documented.

Having said that, its the WC and its good to share it around. Flat, Hilly, Rouleur, puncheur, all good.

It would actually be much better in Australia if the race was held in Sydney- Melbourne, Caneberra and Adelaide all have more established cycling culture and it might instigate some proper government action to make the roads safer for cyclists.

I may be biased as well, but any race that went over the Sydney Harbour Bridge would be an amazing spectacle.

I live in Bergen, chances of snow are 0. But when it comes to rain, I'd say 90% chance it rains during the 9 days it takes to have all these races.
So let's hope it's not like it is right now, heavy rain and windy, today would be hell for the riders.

Anyway, really happy that this show comes to my hometown, and to finally get to see elite cyclists zooming by in my own streets :)

I read that as "90% chance it rains during all the 9 days it takes to have these races."
Could be...

Pretty much. It's been raining non-stop every day for the past 7 days, so...

Isn't Bergen one of the wettest places in the northern Hemisphere? Wettest city in Europe. Lovely.

Look dramatic though.

No, it bloody well hasn't. There's been some rain, but only intermittently. Today, as well as yesterday and wednesday had long spells of sun. Non-stop rain for the past 7 days? You have to get more out on your bike. I only donned rain-gear in the early morning today and yesterday, otherwise I was fine and dandy in normal cycling garb the rest of the week going to an fro work.

Happy with the selection.

They were in it for a long time and were in the running for the 2016 world's as well.

Saw their intended profile a few years' back and it's more a course for the Ronde guys and iirc they had some cobbled hiily sections.

Hopefully Bogota get's the 2018 one and the UCI allows them to stick to their preferred course.
