no.. the biggest insult was this from Dan benson

Spoilers:

While I'm keen to hear opinions on this matter I’m afraid that spoilers, or race headlines, are very much here to stay. I understand that some of you are against this but if you look on the majority of news websites you’ll see exactly the same thing. Whether it’s news, weather or sport, headlines in themselves are there to tell a story and entice people in. There are other factors as well, like search engine optimisation but the main reason is that it fits with real news reporting.

Thanks

Daniel

one of the biggest critisms levelled at the new site almost without exception...

IGNORED

Ahh

My letter to Robert Price, CEO of Futurre Publishing UK. robert.price@futurenet.co.uk

"Hello Sir

I invited you to read some of the feedback (re: the site re-design) from "fans" of the now largely nonexistent cyclingnews.com.

http://forum.cyclingnews.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2

To be crude sir, it is crap. I will not be a patron of cyclingnews any more. This saddens me because I have visited the site at LEAST once, every single day for at least 5 years. You bought building, kept the sign, and bulldozed the rest to the ground."

One place CyclingNews always scored of PezCyclingNews was that it didn't tell you the results of races on the home page.
I rarely watch cycling live. I record it and watch it in the evening, but I still (used to) go to CyclingNews to see the latest news without spoiling my evening's viewing.
I will just not visit CyclingNews during the day now. Less traffic. Chapeau.

Forget the CEO, just write to the advertisers. The source of the money is the key, not the guy spending it and ignoring the whole mess.

oh please, don't pull out that old chestnut, dan…

so according to "Dan Benson":

"I understand that some of you are against this but if you look on the majority of news websites you’ll see exactly the same thing. Whether it’s news, weather or sport, headlines in themselves are there to tell a story and entice people in. There are other factors as well, like search engine optimisation but the main reason is that it fits with real news reporting."

A: if this new site is real reporting, what were you before? you know when we all liked the site?

B: the majority of websites look like crap and are geared for the lowest common denominator: the advertisers. repetitive links, headlines and copy is lazy, condescending and trite. the "new headline" tickers on most other "news" sites is constantly being updated. this does not apply when refreshing your content twice a day.

C: as my sainted mother used to tell me: "if the rest of them jump off that bridge, you going to jump too?" in regards to what the other kids are doing with their websites: who cares? BBC News and cycling news have 2 different target audiences.

D: SEO, SEM, CSS: i work in advertising and you can't bull**** a bull****ter. all those are "under the hood" modifications to the coding and have nothing to with the way the site looks. that is why porn sites appear regardless of what you google: the search engine section has been modified to ping at almost any inquiry.

"they say that patriotism is the last refuge to which a scoundrel clings…" meaning don't defend bad work with worse rationalizations as to why it's bad.

Guys,

Toppermost has made a thread based on a completely valid concern. I'd ask you not to high jack said thread - particularly when we already have (now several) other threads on the topic you're referring to.

Toppermost - the item you've mentioned is not a paid advertisement. It's not uncommon for us to publish items about new product releases from companies that may be of interest to our readers, in fact, it's amongst some of our most viewed content in the tech channel (depending on the product, obviously. A new range of socks doesn't seem to do it four our readers).

I should also point out that this item was posted a month ago on the old website, which is here: http://autobus.cyclingnews.com/tech.php?id=/tech/2009/news/05-22

Cheers
Greg Johnson

Hi all,

Yup, 'tis true that that posting was generated as a result of a press release that Campagnolo/Fulcrum sent out. We're not claiming that it's an original piece nor particularly earth shattering information.

With that being said, our general impression from readers has always been that you *want* to hear when new stuff is being introduced.

Is this bit press release-y? Yes, and it's generally not my preference for things to be that way but I can't dig into everything tech-related myself and we don't currently have enough tech-focused staff to do it, either. But even so, it's still better to get all of you more information than less. We haven't endorsed those wheels in any way nor have we made any comment on how good they are. We're just letting you know they're out there.
