the worst

pedestrians walking dogs with the retractable leash. dog runs off (on leash) 20 feet, then races around in a 20 ft. circle, no way to get around safely, like a f-ing gaucho with his bolas

well if pedestrians will go walking out into the road without looking they only have themselves to blame.

I managed to hit four people last summer, and narrowly missed about twelve. All caught on helmet camera, all their fault, as the aimlessly walked out into the road while talking on their phones. They should just be grateful i wasnt a bus.

FOUR DIRECT HITS AND TWELVE NEAR MISSES...OHHHH THE HUMANITY!
Was this all a single rampage or a tally for the whole summer?

Sorry for the levity (especially because I'm certain that these incidents were painful for you on many levels), but the collection of previous posts is starting to sway me to a another way of seeing the issue...especially regarding NYC. I certainly wouldn't encourage bicycle/pedestrian contact, but it appears at least some might be unavoidable...especially where pedestrians on cellphones is concerned.
As mentioned earlier, the study doesn't assign blame for these pedestrian injuries; simply provides the statistics along with derived conclusions.
So, where does that leave us, as cyclists? Back to my previous point, ride responsibly and if **** happens, it happens...good idea to have a helmet camera like TSF to avoid finger pointing.
Anyway, safe riding doesn't eliminate injuries but perhaps could reduce them.

I only hit them slightly.

Generally when you are riding through a town centre you can spot exactly which ones are going to step out in front of you, so generally you have your fingers on the brakes ready to stop just in time, but late enough to scare the hell out of them.

but occasionally one slips through the net that you havnt spotted.

that was over probably 300+ trips into the town centre. so thats not really that bad a percentage.

I always wear a helmet camera going into town, as its useful if you are involved in anything. Ive got hours of video of idiots in cars cutting across me or generally being stupid.

I don't know where you are from but a posting of that to say the NY Post or the troll Anrdrea Peyser, might be beneficial, even though they still might not understand the concept that pedestrians can and often do cause their own accidents.

A lot of the problem I feel is how the local media report accidents. Bike and car - bikes fault, bike and pedestrian - bikes fault. Media outrage. It's the same over and over. This is followed by a stream of letters to the editor about how all cyclists are jerks, law breakers etc.

A car plows into a bus stop hurting people badly. Small report, no letters to the editor. No outrage from the media. The attitude appearing to be sh#t happens. Poor, poor driver. Nobody cares about the sods waiting for the bus.
