Quite unbelievable misfortune.

Except it's not. MVDP nearly did exactly the same thing on stage 1. Given how potentially dangerous it was, someone, somewhere, be it his own team or the race organisers, should have had the sensibility to prevent others from making exactly the same mistake. Stage 1 was a "near miss" with potentially catastrophic implications - to not have taken it seriously just because MDVP was lucky enough to hit his shoulder rather than his eye is no excuse. The riders should have been given a warning when taking the podium given that the same brand of bottle, in similar conditions, was being presented.

Girmay is only 22, he's just a kid really, may not have opened a bottle of bubbly in his life. All it takes is 10 seconds of education to prevent this happening before taking the podium. The video of MVDP nearly catastrophically injuring himself was all over Twitter etc - it should have been learned from by those in a position of responsibility looking after these young guys.

Just IMO of course.

He just won Gent Wevelgem so he just did that this spring.

#1-I hope that he is OK!
#2-Why would he stand directly over top of it like that? I know that he is tired and excited, but man.
