Yeah, I watched the video again, he didn't even do anything stupid like shake the bottle or so. I think someone should have jumped in and told him not to lean over the bottle like that.

His eye looks clear and normal. It is a real shame he still experiences an issue with it such that he cannot continue. Look forward to more exploits in the future.

It could be a blessing in disguise. He'll be a favorite to win a stage at the Tour for sure, and will be great to see him potentially mixing it up with Alaphilippe and Wout, as well as MvdP.

I wouldn't have too high expectations of Alaphilippe after his LBL crash but Ghirmay would be another good reason to watch the Tour for sure

These days in Italy are very hot, with temperature near or above 30°, can be possible,
In italy we call the cover "gabbietta", that means "little cage"

True but at 22 he's already way too old to win...

I'd say he needs to be there this year if the form is there. What's he going to do in the next two months, rest up for the Tour of Austria? (Is that still a thing?)

A freak accident for sure but it really is his own fault.. you always remove the protection with the cork facing away from people because that thing can shoot out at any time. They should give a 10 seconds safety talk to all podium winners to remind them about it.


I have read this article https://www.cyclingnews.com/news/gi...um-ceremony-changes-after-girmay-cork-injury/ which is completely misleading and states that "He leant over the bottle and the cork came out at exactly the same time." which is not what happened at all, he was removing the protection and was staring straight down doing it..

Wishing for speedy recovery, he should do the tour!

Not sure if they will take him to the Tour: The team have him signed to a long term contract and they weren’t planning on taking him to the Tour a week ago for sensible development reasons.

That said, the publicity must be tempting and they did want him to finish a GT this year. The Vuelta would offer a lower pressure alternative, but of course nothing like the sponsor publicity benefit.

Merckx was 28 when he did it, Cav 25 so I might be wrong but Caleb Ewan was 24 when he won his first Tour stage to complete the set.
