As the best dutch rider from 1997 until he quited.
Also as someone who rarely managed to win. He's quite populair, but it seems he needs media attention though.
He also sometimes co-commentates during the more important mountain stages or classics and I must say he's an added value, but that's mostly because he can correct the other 2.

Thanks for the info

sometimes, i really think that this sport is a joke. if this guy (boogert) is admitting the deal - he should be punished and stripped from all wins as a result of unsportive behavior.
what a farse :(

I got a question for the Dutch posters. How is Boogerd perceived now in the Netherlands? What do people think of him?

nobody cares abotu him anymore. you never hear anything abotu him. also his palmares sucks a monkey ball compared to how much "attention he got." still erik dekker was always more popular and thomas dekker

I don't know which Dutch (ex-)cyclist would win a popularity poll, but my guess is that Boogerd would beat both Dekkers.

Boogerd has become a media figure, that always helps. Even if he gets more annoying every year. He's the go-to celeb for cycling related matters.

that's only because he was only big cyclist we had with erik dekker(in that era), who refuses to go to anythign media related basically.

Maybe it was just me, but I saw Erik Dekker in both Tour du Jour and Vive le vélo this summer. He's not media shy, quite the contrary actually.

Among the common dutch person Boogerd is definately more populair. With his big smile, The Hague accent, spontaneous character and participating in celebrity tv shows. I'm not talking about who is most populair among the cycling fans.

Let me put it this way. If your going to a random dutch town and ask people if they know Boogerd or Erik Dekker I'm sure more people will know Boogerd. Not just because of cycling though.

It's just that Boogerd will get invited more than Dekker.
