Boulder Mafia?

Another thread mentioned a "Boulder Mafia" and I'm looking for more information about this group.

People have their cliques and the inevitable drama created when money is available to turn a hobby into a profession. For example, I have no doubt USACDF is politically super-charged because of the power they have to pick winners and losers with their development funds. What about what's left at Velo News? Some of what passes for journalism (!cough! Chuck Coyle !cough!) is very forgiving.

If there's additional information on this Boulder Mafia, then please share!

Well I live in Boulder, and raced here for years before I retired. I'd say "mafia" is a bit of an overstatement for describing the cycling community here. I don't think there's that much an organized crime element within the community. (Although sometimes I use the word cult, b/c it refers to the intensity of blind faith people put into their passion).

But yeah, who knows... I can say for sure that the mtn bike generation that I developed with and went pro with was very clean (execpt for performance de-enhancing substances), and we were/are often competitive with the roadies (on the road). I'd guess Chuck was a case of either not having any cycling talent and doping up to a Cat 1 level, or maybe he just made a mistake or two and got caught in his late 30's trying to fight the inevitable age related decline.

There is that Mafia Racing in Boulder but I'm guessing that's not what you meant.

I don't really get the title here or the implied question. But I spend some time in Boulder and or Colorado Springs and do a fair bit of riding. In Boulder, the biggest click and the biggest tuules IMHO is the single-speed mountain bike crowd.

of course they are typically the fittest so my opinion might be jaded
