Dear cyclists,
Most of you plan your cycling routes using online tools such as Komoot, Strava, Bikerouter, or similar platforms. While route creation now works well across all of these services, I am not fully satisfied with the current options for saving and displaying personal highlights - specifically route segments that I would like to reuse regularly in my routes.
In my immediate surroundings, I naturally know the roads well, but once the distance increases, that level of detail in my knowledge decreases. In such cases, one can rely on the Strava heatmap or Komoot highlights, but neither works particularly well for me. The heatmap does not provide sufficient clarity, and most Komoot highlights are not what I am looking for (for example, “beautiful flowers” as a road cycling highlight). Bikerouter, a fantastic open-source route planner that I use frequently, currently does not offer a way to save route segments.
For these reasons, I started developing a small browser extension that allows route segments to be marked, categorized, and saved as highlights. The tool works with the route planners Komoot, Bikerouter, and Ride with GPS. Created highlights can be displayed on the maps of all supported planners, regardless of where or how they were created. The extension is currently available for Chrome and Firefox.
In addition to saving route segments, the tool can also analyze and simulate routes based on parameters such as weight, CdA, Crr, and others. This makes it useful both for planning fast rides and for comparing different rides on the same route. In the add on stores you can find the plugin with the name "cc route highlights". If you are interested you can find further information on my website: https://cyccal.com/route-highlights-browser-plugin/
This is purely a personal hobby project with no commercial intention. I started it for my own use but since I think it works well, I would be happy to see others using it as well.
