Can asians ride as fast as westerners?

YES! A lot of my SE asian training partners had not trained/raced with westerners and always wondered if they could keep up. I explained that competitive cycling is just more popular in the west and hence the fitness standard grows and it has nothing to do with physiology based on what part of the world you are from.

I made this youtube vid a few weeks ago whilst cycling in Davao City Philippines. Its a 30km social ride and kids wearing jeans in hardcore heat rode bmx's with ghetto blasters attached..thats hardcore to me!
What I liked is that some people rode S-Works bikes whilst some rode 10$ bikes but they all had one thing in common..going the distance and having fun.

I went on some fast A grade training rides whilst I was there too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iH31UuW1Xy8

Now Im in Chang Mai training with some of the Thai national team and they are as fast as any other national team Ive trained with. Its all about who you train with the most regarding how fit you can get.

but in the end they are still there in the finish male and female are both good
enough to compeet anywhere.

You've got some strong guys on the road (see Arashiro and Beppu) and many on track (Malasyan/Chinese/etc) so nowdays it's more about asian Countries not having a big cycling culture background than anything else.

never ceases to amaze me the title of some threads:rolleyes:

yeah well, the title is condescending to say the least.

Can Vegans on specialized bikes compete?... (probably not) its pathetic really.

I don't think it's a stupid thread. Asians are under represented in the Pro Tour. The question is why? Some say it's because of a lack of cultural identification with cycling, some say it's because Asians are not well adapted physically for cycling. I'm not sure. To suggest that it shouldn't be discussed because it might be patronising is just a form of intellectual censorship. Physical differences exist between races for sure. The Kenyans are good at distance running, the Olympic 100m sprint final is always black and swimming events are largely white? Having spent the last 10 years ferrying 2 of my boys to rugby tournaments all over the place at a regional rep level and I'm very familiar with how well suited the Polynesians are to playing rugby. So many of them are 5ft10, 100-120kgs, short legs, big butts, strong as bulls, low centre of gravity and can still run 100m in under 12 seconds. They're unstoppable at rugby but I'm pretty sure they'd suck at cycling.

I was out training in Chang Mai a few days ago with Tommy (manager from Giant Asia Team) and the dude is a beast on wheels for sure even though he is 'retired and over 40'.

People always give me lame *** excuses like:
Im too old
I started too late
I come from this country
Im too fat
I dont have a 6.8kg bike..

If look hard enough there is ALWAYS someone with less talent than us doing better. How? Hard and smart training/eating/living with people better than you are at the moment.

I hear you, bro. Just the other day I was in Timbuktu, the east side, riding with Fabian Cancellara. He's an animal. We were joined by Giani Bugno. Even though he is long retired, he has still got it. Part way through the ride an armored black Limo pulled up to our little group. The window rolled down and, lo and behold, it was President Obama. He gave us the thumbs up. Near the end of the ride we passed Shania Twain. As soon as she saw us, she started hollering and then lifted her shirt, flashing us. Fabian nearly went off the road. I feel lucky I was wearing Rudy's with clear lenses.

This really does not have anything to do with this thread, so I will try to distract people from my name dropping and boasting with a little pop psychology.

Confucious say, "Time spent on bike not deducted from lifespan."

Longest ride: 1842km.
Biggest week: 2612km
Biggest year: 62372km
Most bananas eaten in a day: 86

Abdu is about as asian as Vino.

Yes, well Vino is from Kazakhstan, the majority of which is apparently in Central Asia. Vino is quite likely Asian, then. Abdoujaparov is certainly Asian, as he hails from Uzbekistan. Believe it or not, this is in Central Asia too. We shouldn't judge people based on how they look.

Apparently you're unaware, but this silly titled thread is not a discussion as to why Asians are under-represented in the Pro Tour - if you want to start that discussion, then so be it.

Can Asians ride as fast as westerners (aka caucasians)? Of course they can - and they currently do.

I thought you said it was a Peace ride? About 44 seconds in, Armstrong rides by. He is blimped up more than last year, but he is still willing to do a LAF ride this time of year. Good for him. Must have been out eating sausage and drinking beer with Ulrich and Kloden. I called Bono to check, and he told me to call McConaughammer (thats what his friends call him on account of his physique and just being a general badass.), anyway, sure enough, they said my bro Lance did a charity ride with some Asians.

+1, same with Africans as well. Is the Tour of Rwanda a big race? Of course not. Could I drop a lot of the riders who race in? I would be highly doubtful of that.

Klodi and Jan were recently in Dubai for some training, and Lance was recently in the Middle East, you might be onto something.

Come on fruitboy, keep a diary or something. These threads are killing me. Can Asians ride as fast as westerners... are you kidding me? Thank God for the sarcastic replies in here, they raised the quality of debate about threefold.

Yeah but I give Lance credit. He can still set a fierce pace. Fruitboy couldn't hold his wheel and had to pull off to the curb at 0:38. Must have run low on banana/date/rice cake sandwiches.

Yea, he and Levi like to beat up on the locals every so often. I bet Fruitboy wasn't any happier than Ulrich to get "The Look." Armstrong loves to give people "The Look." Especially Asians. Asian women don't look enough like his mom, so he has just written off the whole ethnicity. He will even cut in front of a line for a toilet in Asian countries, and just give them all "The Look" as he steps in to do his business.
