to me the most legendary rivalries were those of riders from the same country: Bartali vs Coppi, Koblet vs Kübler, Anquetil vs Poulidor as in comparison e.g. Hinault vs Zoetemelk, Indurain vs Rominger or He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named from Texas vs Ullrich ... in either group the rivalry was similar in terms of pure results, however very different in terms of emotions ... Boonen vs Cancellara was certainly a huge rivalry in terms of results, however definitely not one in terms of emotions (I can't recall the cycling-fan-world being devided in Pro-Boonen vs Pro-Cancellara) ....

its hard to see sagan vs gva as the rivalry when greg is a late bloomer who is also 5 years older so whatever rivalry they can have its not gonna last long - lets say he keeps his peak for next two years, thats gonna be a 4 year total? not that much for a rivalry tbh...boonen and fabian were at least the same generation and even tho they actually rarely competed directly against each other, it felt like its either one or another in the big races, but then injuries ruined it for everyone

its like people argue if warriors vs cavaliers is rivalry now, it kinda is but its nowhere near what celtics vs lakers was in the 80s

Sporza made a documentary about last years Ronde Van Vlaanderen with lots of go pro's in team cars, studios and on motorbikes in the race.

Really put Cancellara's Kwaremont last year in perspective. He is mightily strong on the first part when all the motorbikes are in between. And on Kwaremontplein he has closed the gap to 7 seconds and right at that moment the tv director tells the two tv motorbikes in between to get away and immediately he starts bleeding seconds again.

Could also just be that Sagan upped the pace, when they hit Schilderstraat in the town. They spent their energy differently over the climb.
