Chainring wear pattern - where does it happen?

I think it depends on whether the ratio of sprocket to ring would cause a repeating wear pattern to the gears - e.g a 42X21 or 45X15 etc. If the ratio extended to include the number of chain links, that might be even worse - e.g. 45X15 and 105 link chain.
I was wondering if it might increase ring life by changing ring orientation on the crank every year ??

I asked in this forum section because I hoped the 'wrenchers' might have noticed details about ring wear that I haven't.
