Nice win by Sánchez, chapeau - Movistar have had an eventful day. Lenny VE ran out of staem and I wish Vlasov would stop with the head shaking and get on with it. If he's going to start playing silly b*ggers at the Tour, he wont be Mr Popular.

Unlucky for Van Eetvelt that G2 didn't have G2 syndrome this time. Van Wilder completely burried himself for nothing chasing him for example
I think Van Wilder was more focused on using these races as a way to improve than to win. How he has been riding this week makes so little sense otherwise. He missed every important attack, every important break or decisive move, yet always managed to get into the top 10 by working himself back and wasting energy.

Seriously, if he wants to train himself for his domestique duties for Evenepoel... That might just be the perfect way to do it. As crazy as it sounds.

I wasn't sure how much freedom Pelayo Sánchez would get at Movistar. Today it obviously helped him massively that Aranburu crashed out, and Mayrhofer's riding clearly benefited him, too, but you don't end up in a winning position in this race without being in good shape, and he showed the team that he can deliver when asked.

His second place in the uphill final of last year's race was a lot more random, or at least it seemed that way at the time. If he can continue to sprint like this and improve his climbing, descending and time trialing, then he really can become the next great Asturian GT and one-day racer.

Possibly but I also think he thought he was one of maybe the fastest in that group (before Mayrhoffer came) and thus thought he actually had a good chance at winning resulting in him maybe doing a bit too many turns. In the end he didn't have a lot in the tank anymore.

Pelayo played it way smarter, did do his turns but with a bit of reserve, obviously if everyone thinks like Pelayo you get G2 syndrome and Van Eetvelt wins.

Anyways, looking forward to both at the UAE Tour. Should suit Van Wilder really good with the ITT.

I just think Van Wilder is in early season shape and looking to not burn too many matches in minor races. Watching today, he was always watchful, but let a fair few breaks go and had Cataldo and Lampaert do the chasing. I doubt he felt he wanted to cover every move himself. So he missed the one that went away in the end .... he made it back and finished top 5. He didn't make much effort to sprint against faster guys. I just don't think he's in top shape.

Best stick with worshipping Linda and Misnuda, dude. Comparing a GC rider to Pizzato...

The ITT at the UAE Tour should make the race more open as A.Yates will need a good ride on Jabeel Hafeet to get time back - Van Wilder can do a top 5 finish in the UAE Tour.
I get the impression he's a bit behind his formcurve of the same time last year. He said he's aiming for Catalunya and Romandie, not so much UAE. So i'm not sure he will be good enough yet. Otherwise, sure.
