According to a new WADA commisioned Scottish study, coaches can have a significant influence on whether athletes choose to dope or not?

It found the country's excellent anti-doping record is heavily linked to coaches' anti-doping attitudes, but also suggested the role of coaches role is not being maximised as much as it should be.

It recommended engaging athletes and coaches in anti-doping conversations and experiences and integrating anti-doping information into wider topics, such as optimising performance preparation and recovery.

"optimising performance preparation and recovery"
can certainly be done without doping, but can it be as effective as when some form of 'doping' is used?

For example, a coach telling an athlete, "you don't recover and improve quickly because your natural testosterone level is a little low, but not enough for a TUE". Tough luck, should have chosen different parents....

Well two classic examples are

1. Charlie Francis - Ben Johnson's coach. Francis was a really likeable guy. He really understood track and he was an excellent coach. Unfortunately he turned to the dark side when he concluded Canadian athletes could not compete clean and win, so he introduced a very naïve and susceptible athlete like Johnson to PEDs. Others of his athletes were also introduced to PEDs.


Francis admitted his crimes at the Dubin Inquiry a federal commission established by the Government of Canada to investigate doping in Canadian Sport and the Johnson affair specifically.

2. Johan Bruyneel - although not LA's "coach" per se, as Directeur Sportif, he conspired with LA to introduce doping to USPS, encouraged it and facilitated it.

It seems the key here is whether or not the coach has visions of his own glory. If that is the kind of coach an athlete has then in my view it is more likely that doping for the athlete is on the horizon

One can only presume the authors of this latest "report" did not read the Dublin inquiry and find out where Charlie Francis found a mirror to the program he was running for Ben Johnson. I would propose a counter based on the evidence from that Dublin report - if Scotland wants to have an excellent record on anti-doping then it could do with adjusting its historic records in athletics and sending a very clear message to the dopers. It might take a long time, but we will get you. Think - "golden age of Scottish Athletics in the modern era, ie when PEDs could influence performance".
