Backsted= Smith

Porter <<< Quigley.

+ any ES broadcast without muppet as the commentator needs to be treasured.

In races such as this Porter and Smith have some decent knowledge of the British cycling world having commentated on things like the Tour series ect. Quigley rarely knows what he's talking about so it's the itv pair that get my vote.

To be fair to Declan, he did do Tour Series up to this year. It's his knowledge of the WT / PC pros that sinks him. He's just not very good at filling the dead air time likely on days which will end in sprints.

On the 'muppet' mooted above, I enjoyed the finale of GP de Wallonie with him and Tony Gibb. Carlton's over-inflated passion and turn of phrase can make a broadcast (he had a great line about Voeckler being nasty for forcing Matthias Frank to break as the flamme rouge approached), while DQ increasingly sounds like someone commentating on people queuing for their shopping at Tesco.

I went with Eurosport in the end, largely because even though DQ's commentary reminds me of Father Austin Purcell from Father Ted, he at least knew that Ciolek had won Milan San Remo this year. Hugh is of his time - I'd love to hear his reminiscences of his racing and training in the same way I enjoyed Tim Hilton's book - but I don't think he's fit for purpose to commentate on a race in 2013.

So out of Liggett, Kirby, Porter and Quigley how would people rate them in order? (Hatch is miles better than any of them so he's excluded from this contest).

It's a horrible choice really as they're all terrible. Amazingly I think Liggett actually annoys me the least of those four so he's my number 1 followed by Quigley, Porter and then the muppet bringing up the rear.

I'll add in Harmon.

here's how id rank it.

Muppet

ligget

porter

Quigley

Hatch
Harmonn.

None of them are the kind of geeky knowledge buffs or enthusiasts you'd expect a lead commentator to be. None of them are very accurate.

Hatch and Quigley are the least nausiating, least offensive and most tolerable to me (so far). I suspect also the most tolerable to any of the decent co-analysts. Liggott and Harmon are the most natural commentators but both fairly offensive. Kirby single-handedly achieved what I thought was impossible - made me switch to ITV during the Tour. I find the "muppet" references a bit insulting - not sure what Kermit and Miss Piggy have done to deserve that comparison.

He did the commentary with Maggie that day.

I like Harmon and have missed him since he has gone. Porter is just about tolerable in races like the ToB supported by Smith. I can't stand Quigley and he'd be below P+P. Kirby somewhere in the middle as he does at least get involved in the key moments.

That's how I knew it :) I remember well the lengthy discussion between them on the use of a small rear mudguard. Sometimes I wake up in a cold sweat thinking about it.

Just looking the UCI website and it has the BBC's coverage for the world road race from 12.30-16.15. From 12.30-14.15 it's on the red button. I don't have the red button function over here so I only get 2 hours of coverage so. No mood to watch it now. And even though they are coming on 12.30 for their interactive coverage, looking around the coverage for the rest of Europe they are coming on live for the race even earlier for their entirety.

The Team Time Trial is also on the red button.

I really don't understand why they choose to put coverage like this on the red button. Surely they could put the first couple of hours on bbc3 or bbc4 as its unlikely they are showing any else worthwhile at that time of day. In your circumstance without access to red button coverage it will be easier for you to just find a decent stream online.

bbc3 & 4 only run from 7pm to 7am

I agree it is annoying putting it on the red button though, I will not be around and cannot record red button stuff.

I knew they wouldn't put it on BBC3 or 4 as they dont come on air until 7 at night. Sad state of affairs you have to use a dodgy stream for some of the Worlds.

Can you get it streamed from the BBC website?

BBC player is geo restricted here when I tried to use it before. And regarding the UCI youtube channel as far as I know I think that's only available if the race isn't shown on TV in the country you are living in. That won't be the case over here with the BBC coverage available.

EDIT: From the UCI website:

A combination of live and highlights will also be available on the UCI’s Official You Tube channel, depending on each territory’s broadcast commitment.

Yeah it's annoying. In the past they have shown live Euro championship and World Cup football games before this but obviously that is completely different to a World championship cycling event in terms of viewers in the uk.

The whole race will be available online however as the gooner said it will be geo restricted.

While we have Sky Digital over here, my provider is UPC and they don't do that function. Other aspects of that platform are more appealing but that's the one drawback.

The BBC have dumped Hugh Porter as commentator for the Worlds in favour of Simon Brotherton, who is absolutely clueless. At the moment Rob Hatch is working on the ToB for BBC Radio 5 Live. Why couldn't he get the gig?

A football commentator. He's with the new BT Sports channel now doing the commentary for the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1. I was only listening to him on Friday for the Moenchengladbach game and even in football terms his commentary is nothing to write home about. I think he did a bit of work on the Giro and the Tour this year for BBC Radio 5 Live but he's really a johnny come lately to the sport.

This BBC and Sky Sports jumping on the bandwagon off Sky's success is ruining the coverage. The Worlds now with the BBC and Sky not even showing live coverage of the Tour de Suisse with just an hour recap show of the entire race all that they showed of it. Putting races on the red button is very frustrating and I hope all this isn't a sign of things to come in the future.

I won't be able to watch the TTT live today and have no way of recording it because of this.
