Although his pet phrases are annoying (really really mind numbingly annoying in fact) the worst part is his complete inability to understand what's going on in the race.

Yesterday he had someone talking to Greipel to tell him to ease it off because they weren't going to catch the break, Maggy had to point out to him that Greipel had THREE team mates up the road and was try to block the chase not help it. Just awful.

Other things that annoy me: -

A guessing game of who wins every day.

How often he mentions how far to go in the closing stages, we know, its on the screen, that's the only reason he knows.

Cannot agree more with all above. And as he himself today admitted, he can't see so well (as he used to do, to identify riders) D'oh.

Kirby does (or did?) some motor sport commentating on Eurosport 2, he actually was very good with that. Unlike with cycling.

Heard him commentate Le Mans 24 at least once. Enjoyed it.

While he's mostly bad, I cannot think of anyone but him who would give us these. These were good.

I mean, the enthusiasm.

ANother Kirbyism yesterday as the peloton streamed through a narrow gap with road furtniture in the middle:

To the effect of: "The brave marshalls in the middle girding their loins, just as the riders will be doing shortly!"

Fell asleep while watching Driedaagse De Panne-Koksijde TT and then suddenly through my sleep some one screamed like crazy. It was Kirby when Wiggins went first in finish. Funny stuff.

It sounded like he'd just found a spider in his underpants. I thought he was going to punch his monitor he was that excited.

He doesn't ever try to hide his mancrush on Wiggins. His voice went up again when he saw that Wiggins finished 3rd overall. :p

I was discussing with my wife the 7-strong 'mass debate' that is taking place on UK tv tonight and was able to add - "there's the spoken version of a msss debate" as Kirby exploded all over our screens as Sir Wigs set the fastest time.

That second video was the best final kilometre of a race i've ever watched.

Agreed, It's fantastic. Couldn't have been scripted better. From the misdirection of thinking he's still on the side of the road, to the zoom in to reveal it's not him and most of all the money shot showing he's still out in front. Brilliant! Kirby is fantastic too, really ads to the drama.

I know i'm going against the grain here ... but i quite like Carlton Kirby.

The thing is ... i know enough about pro cycling to not need any commentary. Dont recognise all the riders all the time but i can generally work out whats going on.

Kirby actually adds that comic element. I love his enthusiasm and rubbish jokes. Yes he rambles on about general rubbish, but if you take his commentary for what it is ... background music if you like, it actually adds to the experience in my view. Add a co-commentator like Matt Stephens who is also funny but with greater knowledge and it all somehow works.

Its even better when Sean Kelly is the co-commentator ... anyone ever played Sean Kelly Bingo?

Pick seven Sean Kellyism's ... like the above. Then treat yourself to a shot when he says it. If he says all seven then you get a bottle of wine :)

Quick tip ... Bonifications, Hesitation and Calculation are good starters.

OMG!! Why do Eurosport punish the rest of the english speaking nations with these two morons??? Sky, sky, sky, swoon, swoon,swoon....vomit vomit vomit

Normally this kind of level of shilling has to have a message saying "the following message is a paid advertisement by Pinarello in conjunction with Sky Professional Cycling Team" flash up on the bottom of the screen, and a premium-rate phone number to order in the bottom corner.

Even the only audience emails they're reading out are about Wiggins and the new Pinarello (which they take care to name at every opportunity).

I get it, it's early in the race and there's not much to talk about (at least mid-shill Declan bothered to update us on the women's race, which is much closer to the business end of proceedings), but I've spent a lot of time trying to be fair to the commentators, and here their fanboyism is just reaching Phil & Paul's 24hr Lance Channel levels.
