At least Roche can spot when something important is happening and will stop what he's talking about rather than being totally blind to it and continuing to blather on about a theory of the day or who his favorites are.

Yeah, he's actually very alert to the race. I was surprised by how much I noticed it, which I suppose implies I’m really not used to that from the Eurosport commentators.

Kirby is much better than most of these GCN types; he's less Britcentric and apart from when Simon Clarke does something, he's a lot less prone to hero worship.

I was the same. He just spends it getting the horn over Ineos especially Turner. When Sheffield attacked her shouted out, realised how it sounded and back tracked.

I get he's a Brit (as am I) and there will be some bias, but come on.

This why I'm currently a Kirby fan (this could change yet again due to overexposure) but he just commentates and makes bad jokes and let's the expert be the expert whereas JB tries to do both and succeeds at neither.

But even that isn't perfect, for example during the recent Milan-Sanremo, Steve Chainel got a bit drunk 4 hours into the broadcast (or thereabouts) & started randomly screaming & hollering.

Chris "towed a rival up Alpe d'Huez in the Dauphiné to make sure there was an American on the podium" Horner? That Chris Horner? Is he getting more cosmopolitan in his old age?

By far and away the best yesterday was Magnus Backstedt. As always. No stupid overdramatising, identifying riders well, no overly obvious bias, knows the history of the race, gives great tactical insight, gives insight into what its like to race the classics. And has a sense of humour as well

I suspect that one issue is that because a lot of GCN non-racing content is so casual - stuff like light-hearted challenges and banter between hosts which exudes a vibe of trying to be like Top Gear for cyclists, sometimes that bleeds into the race content for those commentators who have joined the team relatively recently, whereas people like Backstedt and Lloyd, who have been doing commentary for a number of years, are a bit better at dialling down the in-jokes and banter in favour of more serious and less partisan coverage when required.
