Commonwealth Games doping thread

A thread for the Commonwealths, might die a death but we'll see...

First things first, I passed to people from doping control in the West End of Glasgow this morning so they are testing. The closest venue was the lawn bowls however... Is earl grey banned?

you mean fans with a "doping control" jacket?

Nope, these were fairly serious looking fellas in blue polo shirts with "doping Control" embroidered on them. They wouldn't tell me where they were headed but they were going to collect samples. Opening ceremony tonight, not sure if that counts as out of competition?

Only a complete moron will turn up positive at such an event. They will probably conduct half of their drugs test on lawn bowlers to say hey, look how clean the games were, we did x number of tests for x number of positives.

I think a couple of days before & after the games are considered in competition. Not sure though.

In rank of importance, gold at the Commonwealth games is roughly equivalent to passing your driving test, or getting a free toy in your cereal. If you're going to all the effort of doping to try and get one, you're doing life wrong

Yeah right! Another jealous American arrogantly demeaning the CG because they cannot participate in the Games. The only free toys in America are made in China. With talent like Usain Bolt, and numerous English, Kiwi, Aussie, Indian, Scottish, Welsh, Jamaican and Canadians who won medals at the London Olympics this will be a great Commonwealth Games. And who needs a cheat like Tyson Gay in the 100! Come to think of it, without the Americans the level of hubris at the Games will be way down. Come to think of it who needs Americans!

I suggest you go to Sturgis where that paragon of American virtue Lance Armstrong has been invited to be the head marshal at the local parade. Yep you Americans really know how to do life right by honouring serial liars, fraudsters, bullies and cheats.

I know your comment is fatuous, vacuous and puerile when one looks at the world education index and finds 4 Commonwealth Countries in the top 16 (New Zealand - 1st, Australia - 4th, Canada - 6th, and Trinidad and Tobago -16th) and the USA languishing down there at 21st between Lithuania and Italy.

PS Don't even think you could make a career as a diplomat! An Ugly American - yes!

I am certainly not as drug obsessed as a number
of CN forum posters, but offhand the only Games
non-negative I can recall is a Canadian tri-athlete
in 2002, but I'm sure there have been others.

The Commonwealth represents about one-third
of the Earth's population and the Commonwealth
Games are a unique and beautiful gathering, and
a number of World Records have been set in
previous Games.

I suspect that the usual large and talented busking
population in Buchanan Street and other parts of
Glasgow will be even larger and more diverse over
the next 10 days, if previous Commonwealth Games
are any indication.

Whilst there are better events to dope for, sponsorship and team selection count a lot towards motivations to dope.

It's a pretty bold assertion to suggest lawn bowling is a clean sport.

Agreed.

When wheel chair curling athletes get popped, it's pretty much a given that there will be dopers everywhere.

It can be an excellent event to dope for. Think back over the years on how many high profile Aus swimmers first got noticed at the Comm games. It can be the same for Carribean sprinters, African distance runners and various track cyclists.

Being smack bang in the middle of the Olympic cycle also helps provide a solid litmus test against reasonable competition. If something doesn't quite work there's still two years to get it right.

I can't help but agree. A bunch of free-loading, self absorbed folks having a party at our expense. And that's just the officials. Don't get me started on the "athletes".

Depends on the sport really, soem of the sports the standard is actually pretty high. Take triathlon for instance, most of the strong nations in that sport are at the games minus USA and Europeans obviously.
