60 points on the line in the speed skating mass start seems a bit much.
It is. Women's mass starts were very dull for a good many years, because nobody with a good finish bothered with any of the intermediate sprints, and then Irene Schouten invariably won the sprint and the title at the end.

I felt that they were trying for a points race, but they ended up with a scratch race.

Look it's speed skating. They originally just had the distances, then they wanted to expand and they just copied *** from track cycling without having a clue about what could make track cycling remotely interesting.

Denmark is once again better than Georgia across Winter Olympic history, and we didn't even have our nationalised Russian, Viktor Thorup's wife Sofia, skating here.

The mens skating mass start: Congrats Bergsma for winning and for racing! To the rest, you negative raced yourself out of gold...lame. You also made what should be an exciting race to watch, not the least bit exciting...lame.

The womens race was better.

Quote of the Olympics: "Its the best hangover of my life!" ---Alex Ferreira

Klaebo! WOW!
Yes, Klaebo!

While it can be tiresome to see one person win so much I think it's also nice to see a man in his prime perform to his best potential. Four years from now who knows, Klaebo will be 33 and the Klaebo era may come to an end.

Men's mass start in speed skating (16 laps on the warming up lane) had a considerably lower average speed than the individual 10k.

That's genuinely shocking to me
It was so unlikely to happen that I hadn't even noticed there was a race with a Danish participant yesterday so I only saw the news late in the evening and then had to watch it back with three different sets of commentators.

But yeah, there just isn't much tradition for winter sports here. We have had snow and frozen lakes for a month until yesterday and I think that goes into the top 10 of longest such periods during my lifetime so there is no chance of naturally establishing a winter sports culture.

Boldy gets the first goal for the US but Canada has more shots on goal... seeing as our our Canadian friends are probably at the bars already do they take a shot each time Canada has a shot on goal, I wonder.

And while this live game is on NBC keeps on replaying Miracle on Ice, somehow I don't think the US beating Canada today would carry the same weight as beating the USSR back in 1980.

I'll admit my brain didn't do any thinking more complex than "Denmark = Scandinavian -> surely they must be decent something in winter sports"

Yea, the other thing is here this is two teams of top NHL professionals, not the college kids and ATOs of 1980...

Yeah, besides the political clash that's what also strikes me as so absurd on NBC's part, back in 1980 the US had a bunch of amateurs while the Soviets were a professional powerhouse. No such thing can be said about this game, so why is NBC going on about the fecking Miracle on Ice?
