Meanwhile, Montgomerie has revealed he has undergone a small blood transfusion in Germany in an attempt to speed up his recovery from a torn calf muscle which threatens his appearance in the British Open at St. Andrews next month.

A doctor has injected the muscle with blood from a young cow.


Anyone know if this is legal/illegal in pro cycling?

It seems perfectly reasonable to inject a calf muscle with cow blood.

in all seriousness, that jumped out at me too. i'm injured (shin splints) and can't train at the moment, would injecting cow blood help me why hasn't my doc or physio told me this?

The blood is described to be injected into the calf muscle. I have never heard of this approach to healing before, and am sceptical about the benefice from this. Perhaps the surgeon wants to stimulate the immune system locally?

I would personally not like to contribute with calf or cow for this.

It's not actually cow blood. It's more like free hemoglobin (the red stuff which is normally bound in red blood cells) which has been chemically processed to make it compatible with the human body. But the raw material is cow blood.

These things are usually labeled as HBOCs (hemoglobin based oxygen carriers), which together with PFCs have been thought to have propelled certain riders to victory.

In the case of injuries, HBOCs and PFCs have the advantage to be very small oxygen carrying molecules which can therefore reach places normal RBCs can't. The greatest advantage could be in the case of brain trauma. You always want brain cells to be well oxygenated. If you're a rich athlete, your 'brain' is your muscles so to speak.

By the way, hematide got bad news a few days ago. Apparently some pre-dialytic patients did not react too well. Amgen might dodge a bullet there.

When Michael Rasmussen got into strife in 2007 over his whereabouts, I remember hearing about an incicent from his mountain biking days when he allegedly used a teammate as a mule to transport a package of pigs' blood from the USA to Europe for personal use.

That's the only allegation of heterogolous blood doping that I was aware of (although other have mentioned in here).

Sounds like someone got mixed up with platelett injection for torn muscles and yes that is banned.

the story I read on that said it was BIOPURE, not cow's blood. Gross either way...

...and a milker for the sudden lactation pressure. One unit in, two units out is a good rule for capacity unless you grow the extra stomachs and have a yearning for alfalfa; then more milk storage.
