Hi guys,
I had an issue with my BMC, I was riding it and to avoid a crash with a car a had to run through a pothole, not a big one, but my frame cracked on the downtube, I did not fell from the bike, not even got a flat, a bite on the tube or a broken spoke, just a cracked frame with not more than 6 months old. Is that normal?
I wrote to BMC but the guy who answered me seems to be an ***, I dont get how on earth a frame cracks before a broken spoke or a flat on the wheel!?
Anyone with a similar thing? What do you recommed?
Any help?
Thank you,
Sorry for the bad english.

A frame shouldn't crack like that from a pothole. Did you buy the bike brand new from a store? If so, take it back to the dealer and show them the crack, it should be covered by warranty - a 6 month frame should definitely not crack like that from reasonable use.

A quality carbon frame like a TMR02 should have a very, very long lifespan. In the absence of crash damage, a carbon frame can easily outlast steel or aluminium. They are VERY strong in use. Faulty frames do get through, though.

The issue you may encounter is the perception that people crash carbon frames (maybe not while riding e.g. on the roof of the car driving into the garage), break them, then just claim they broke while they were "just riding along". I don't know whether people regularly attempt that sort of fraud, but your dealer may think that they do. Suspicion is high.

I took it to the guy, he send the emails to BMC but they say that it is my fault, that they dont know how deep the pothole was and more bla bla.

It's all about light weight these days and this is a light frame. I doubt BMC will warranty but either a crash replacement or repair(Calfee or Ruckus)....but hit something hard enough and chances are something will break. Unfortunately the force goes somewhere and broken frame instead of tire/wheel/fork.

Having said that, it really shouldn't crack there unless you are a very heavy rider(apology in advance) and maybe not even then. If you do get a replacement, I'd sell it and buy something else.

See the positive side. Had it not cracked you'd risk snapping it in two on some rough descent. This is just one reason I'll never use carbon components*. If your bike falls for some reason you'd be better ditching everything off unless a handlbar breaking on your hands and a massive face plant is your thing.

Just kidding, I simply can't afford most stuff.

That's suspicion to which I was alluding. Short of legal action, or trying to take it up the ladder yourself at BMC (A letter to the CEO?), you may have to just cut your losses and get a new frame. Sucks, eh?
