Cycling after pelvic fracture

Recently suffered left pelvic fracture as a result of fall on TT bike. Suffered non displaced anterior pubic ramus fx, anterior acetabulum fracture also non displaced, and a small sacral fracture. No surgery needed. Six weeks non weight bearing to my left leg.

Has anyone out there experienced similar injuries and how was your recovery? I hope to be back on trainer within six weeks, just not sure how long it will take to return to form and serious cycling.

It couldn't happen at a worse time. I had multiple epic rides coming up to include the Garret County Grand Fondo Diabolical Double, Time Trials x 2, and a road race.

Thanks

Ken

No personal experience but only my thoughts as a physician. You can probably get back to "cycling" faster if you could start on a recumbent, because weight bearing is most likely going to be an issue on an ordinary saddle following a pelvic fracture. Shorter cranks would also be helpful, I think, if ROM is an issue in either leg. I am not sure what a "left" pelvic fracture is but if it is going to be affecting one leg more than another then you might want to consider (and I hate to bring this up as it surely will attract the haters) using independent cranks to facilitate bring the bad leg up a little faster, since the strong leg cannot assist it in any way.

I fell onto my left side. That is what I meant by left pelvic fracture. My crank lengths 170mm. Hopefully, I don't have much reduced Range of motion since the fracture is more anterior on the acetabulum. Time will tell. It may be pain at the Low point of my pedal stroke that may cause more of the problem. I guess if it got to the point where I could not tolerate normal cycling position then could go with recumbent. Pray that's not the case...

Work with your doctor and therapists. Based upon your name I suspect that you must be a nurse so that shouldn't be much of a problem.

Yeah a Nurse Anesthetists, and I cycle with Orthpods. I am good at taking people's pain away just not too good at preventing my own pain.

I cycle 4000+ miles a year. A goal of mine thus year was to become a better climber and time trialest. Just started to train with power, and had already completed three time trials (1 hill climb TT), road race, Crit, century, and 112 mile Blue Ridge last month that included 1000 ft of climbing in one day.

I'm sure I'll get form back. By biggest problem will be to learn patience.

Good day navycrnaman and other members reading this post. I recently suffered a fractured pubic ramus. It's stable, was walking with crutch on day 4 post accident. Its been two weeks and I am off pain killers with moderate to barely tolerable pain depending on if I'm sitting, walking or flat on my back. Sitting is actually the worst. So wondering how long recovery took you navycrnaman or anyone else who has been through this. I did read the recommendation for the recumbent. Considering starting back with that option.

Any information greatly appreciated.

This thread is 5 years old, I wouldn't get your hopes up that they will respond. There may be others though that can share their experience.
