Jempi did not crash while training. He crashed in a kermess race in Retie, close to Antwerp. He was in the lead group with the De Vlaeminck brothers and Verbeeck among others. He had just taken his share of the workload, so relegated at the back of the group, he had to negotiate a corner but probably looked around his shoulder to assess the gap with the chase group and could not see the car coming in opposite direction.

(Unlike what is often thought, the lady in the car made no mistake)


Jempi's revelation that Gimondi tried to bribe him in Leicester was true and admitted by the Italian by 1973.
