Cyclingnews Build a Bike Thread: Week3 pt2 - The Wheelset

Which wheelset combo should go on the $6000 USD bike?

  • Williams 58 Full Carbon Tubular $1000 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1250

  • Poll closed .
Ok, the results of the previous threads poll are in and the winner was:

Mid priced race wheelset + a cheaper training wheelset

So our budget for the two wheelsets is $1500, and this is what we have come up with:

The list for the poll is:

1. HED Ardennes $995 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1245
2. Rolf Vigor (SL) Clincher $999 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1250
3. Neuvation C50 Tubular set $600 + Neuvation C50 Clincher set $900 = $1500
4.2009 Zipp Team Issue Wheelset $900 + Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset $600 = $1500 - Suggested by El Imbatido
5. 2009 Mavic Ksyrium Premium Wheelset $1200 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1450 - Suggested by Elapid
6. Vuelta Corsa Carbon $900 + Vuelta Corsa Super-Lite $400 = $1300
7. Dura-ace 7850 Carbon Clinchers $780 + Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset $600 = $1380
8. Fast Forward F5R Carbon Tubular Wheel Set $1150 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1400
9. Williams 58 Full Carbon Tubular $1000 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1250

the regular kysrium SL are the same as the premiums and a whole lot cheaper. you would have to be retarted to buy the premiums or just really want to buy black wheels.

Hmmmmm...... think I'll leave that alone! ;)

Vuelta Carbon Tubular on sale $899, don't now the quality but since they are aero, they are good for racing?

No tubs. Too much of a pain in the rear end for unsupported riding. HED Ardennes for racing/sportives, solid pair of 32 hole hand-builts with the balance $500.

So far we have:

1. HED Ardennes $995 + ???
2. Rolf Vigor (SL) Clincher $999 + ???
3. Neuvation C50 Tubular set $600 + ???
4. Neuvation C50 Clincher set $900 + ???
5. 2009 Zipp Team Issue Wheelset $900 + Mavic Ksyrium Elite Wheelset $600 = $1500 - Suggested by El Imbatido
6. 2009 Mavic Ksyrium Premium Wheelset $1200 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1450 - Suggested by Elapid
7. Vuelta Corsa Carbon $900 + ???

Are there any other suggestions for good reliable cheap wheelsets or are we just going to pair all the mid range sets with Mavic Open Pros.

There is also still some room for somemore mid range sets as well if anyone else has some suggestions.

Mavic Open Pro for training wheels. Bomb proof.
agree as well
However i noticed someone found them for 250 us at pricepoint
we could do
open pro 250
Kysrium Elite 600
Neuvation Carbon 600
and still come within budget, this way some of us can have our tubbie race wheels and other people can race on the Kysriums
:D

So our budget for the two wheelsets is $1500, so fire away with suggestions and we will eventually make a poll.

I'll start with a few suggestions (nothing is set in stone yet, so feel free to change it however you see fit):

Mid priced sets
HED Ardennes $994.95 - Repatocorse
2009 Mavic Ksyrium SL Premium Wheelset $1200 - Competitive Cyclist

Cheap Training sets
?????

I guess we don't need to pair them up yet, but if you want to suggest any combos that would be awesome.

The original thread that started this game can be found here:

So fire away.......

Race wheels-Velocity Escape onto Record, DA or DT rims, built according to rider's needs-about $750

Training wheels-Velocity hubs laced to DT 1.1, 32 3 cross, double butted spokes-about $400

Take a bike trip with the money saved.

Mavic Open Pro $250 - Price Point

Why not pair the two Neuvation C50 tubs and clinchers together??

Campagnolo Neutron Ultra for midpriced racewheelset, available for ~$1000 Totalcycling
decent hubs and mavic open pro for training or perhaps fulcrum racing 5

Campagnolo Neutrons would not be compatible(?) (please correct me if i'm wrong, as i've already stated i know jack all about wheelsets) as this bike is built up with SRAM Force. But am i right in saying that Shimano is compatible?

SRAM runs very well with both campy and shimano cassettes (well, as well as SRAM works, but thats a matter of debate). Open pros with ultegra or dura ace hubs are a no brainer for training. Any one of the following would make great race wheels:

Fulcrum 0's (on sale $999)
http://www.biketiresdirect.com/pfur0t/fulcrum_racing_zero_tubular_wheelset/pp.htm

Williams wheels ($999) I have these rims badged as DTEC and they are great for the $$$$
http://www.williamscycling.com/58ct/58ct.html

Fast Forward 50mm carbon tubes ($1,100) also in 40 and 30mm.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Fast_Forward_F5R_Carbon_Tubular_Wheel_Set/5360039609/

Or Dura Ace 24mm carbon laminates ($780) Awesome wheels for the price.
http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Shimano_Dura_Ace_7850_Carbon_Laminate_Clincher_Wheel_Set/5360030874/

No Mavic race wheels. The only good race wheel they make is the Cosmic Carbone SL (not the carbon spoked ones). And Mavic porducts with the exception of open pros are way too expensive.

Campagnolo 10s cogsets are spaced wider than shimano or Sram, resulting in poor shifting. Campagnolo 10s actually shifts shimano/sram 9s better than 10s BUT all Campagnolo and Fulcrum wheelsets can be converted to HG/sram with a steel freehub body available from Campagnolo.

While Im sure that what you say about the spacing is correct the reality is that campy clusters shift great on sram (better than the Sh%t house sram clusters) and the sram clusters work ok on a campy bike. This is one of the reasons sram are getting used for a lot of neutral spares.

Ok a bit more of an updated list:

1. HED Ardennes $995 + ???
2. Rolf Vigor (SL) Clincher $999 + ???
3. Neuvation C50 Tubular set $600 + Neuvation C50 Clincher set $900 = $1500

8. Fast Forward F5R Carbon Tubular Wheel Set $1150 + ???
9. Williams 58 Full Carbon Tubular $1000 + ???

Any more ideas for cheap wheels besides the Mavic Open Pros or should we just pair everything up with the pros and if budget allows: ksyrium elites(?)

Any other suggestions??

Yes to the Open Pros. Big fat NO to the ksyriums. They are just not worth it, a good set of Opens will perform better and we will have money for the rest of the kit (if we are doing that) If there is any money left build them up with better spokes/ hubs and then they can be used as a windy day race set.

while the old opens give up a few grams to the DT's after the DT exploding single eyelet rims I give them a miss. The open pros last longer to.

Ok, so people were running out of ideas so i finished the combos off, by using Mavic Open-pros, Ksyrium Elites. Yes i know some of you didn't want the elites but i thought we should have some variety in our diet:D. Also there is a couple of combos that use the same brand for both sets ie. Vuleta, neuvation. It will be a three day poll, so please vote. After this we only have the bits and bobs for the bike to get, then we are done.

The list for the poll is:

1. HED Ardennes $995 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1245
2. Rolf Vigor (SL) Clincher $999 + Mavic Open Pros $250 = $1250
