Il Tas conferma: Rebellin positivo ai Giochi Olimpici di Pechino

Tuttobici

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has dismissed the appeal filed by the Italian cyclist Davide Rebellin against the decision of the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) of 17 November 2009 disqualifying the athlete from the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and withdrawing his silver medal.

Rebellin will return in April next year

The Monaco Cycling Federation has announced that the two-year ban for Davide Rebellin, for his positive EPO Cera in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, will end on April 27, 2011 since the announcement of his doping violation was a few days before the start of the Giro 2008.

Therefore, the results between August 2008 and April 2009 will be canceled, and the UCI may appeal that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

The announcement came at the right moment for Rebellin, who turned 40 in August, and is returning next year to competition now knowing he will get a license for 2011. In his last active year in 2009, Davide won Fleche Wallonne, two stages of the Tour of Andalusia, and was third in Liège.

I second the hope that he'll return. The guy always animated a race.

He'll be nearly 40 when he comes back. What do you think he'll be able to do clean? Any team that signs him is showing that they're desperate.

Folks, my comment specifically questioned why the DEA was not going after the doctors (or whoever) that are illegally distributing these drugs to athletes. I didn't make any mention of the companies that create the drugs, that's not possible not to mention it wouldn't make any sense to discourage them from inventing new cancer treating drugs of course! It's not their fault that people are abusing these drugs that were created with good intentions.

And one thing that sucks is that pharma companies have no incentive to put any kind of gene markers or DNA signature or whatever in these drugs in order to help identify their use as PED's (aside from maybe some bad public relations). That is extra R&D cost that provides little benefit to the companies unless a Governement or governing body like WADA or some such pays them to do it.

Didn't bother to read the rest of the thread but this is what Novitsky is doing on behalf of USADA and the Feds. The DEA chases little drug users and dealers around and Novitsky's office is after pharmaceutical industry patent pirates, distributors and yes, doctors. Big Pharma has a huge stake in keeping the internet traffic under control as much of these PEDs are manufactured without honoring patents or paying royalties. Can it be stopped? As Alpe and Bro have pointed out the success rate is low. That's why Microsoft has an entire, well funded division seeking out software pirates and feeding the info to the government for action; they know how to police it better.
If the pharmaceutical industry wanted to end PED misuse they could do it in a heartbeat. They just want their cut of the action at this point.
