what do riders want?

Sure, groupthink can occur in reverse. But aside from the career-ending obstacles already in place for those who fess up, who here believes anyone will lead the charge saying, "Take my drugs away! I wanna suffer like a dog for the sake of authenticity!"

I mean, c'mon. Ain't gonna happen.

hmm, are you a pro rider? i dont think the majority of riders want to take drugs. i would speculate that if they were sure everyone was clean then the vast majority would also want to ride clean, however you define clean. of course there are always jokers who think they can beat the system, thats why you test. unfortunately the testing is not quite good enough to ensure everyone gets caught so some feel they need to dope to be competitive. and so it goes-the Prisoners [of the road] Dilemma

Have Chavanel's performances really been that much better this year than last?

Depends on point of view, but they seem about the same. He tried the cobbles for the first time and did extremely well (which makes sense, given how experienced his team is at them)....and for the rest of the season he was invisible.

So the first half of the season was much better than previous years and the second part was aeons worse.

Gotta say his 08 was much better. He seems to have off-seasons - I don't think 07 was particularly great, no victories anyway..
