Can you fight off one of these bad boys with one?

The best defence I can think of is a quick squirt of the water bottle. Somehow viscious dogs can't feel any pain but a little bit of water would damage their shinny coat so they give up right away. Those vane creatures.
+1 on the non-lethal, humane go-away-little-doggy thread.

They've never seen a cyclist before? Mistake us for a cat? Dunno...but did a "recommended" loop ride outside of Prattville, Alabama once and was chased by no less than 10 households worth of dogs in 40 miles....

I say households because I literally could not count up the total amount dogs/critters that came scrurrying out of bushes of off of front porches of some of the houses...10-20 of the little *******s at one house...

Only two dogs in the whole ride were serious though...I've not done that loop since ;)

I'll get chased locally by some dogs (rural Wisconsin), but never attacked. But training in North Carolina, there are tons of unleashed dogs that go for blood. Some of them don't feel water when you squirt them.

I carry a frame pump because I could care less about vanity on my $800 carbon frame. It's also super convenient in every situation (dogs, flats).

Lezyne Road Drive

I got my Lezyne Road Drive pump a couple days ago. I haven't tried to pump up a tire from flat yet, but I was pleasantly surprized at how easy it was to bring it from 105-110 lbs. And that's with the smaller (medium) size.

I broke my first Zephel HP on a doberman in the 80s. This thread made me remember it. I carry some tiny Topeak thing now in my tyre bag. I hadn't had a flat in over a year, then got 2 on some ride (with only one tube) had to walk 1/2 mile to nearest shop for a second tube.

I carry a Genuine Innovations pump/CO2 dispenser in my pocket. Must admit that I like the way my bike looks without a frame pump. Used to use one for a while back in the 90s but those days are history.

I've had lots of dogs give chase but never attempt to do anything - they appear to be too busy watching my wheels or my legs and feet going in circles. They eventually give up.

It's unlikely any pump user will discard their pump.

Just yesterday, as I rode past a patch of fresh glass, I came upon
a nice discarded road tube and 2 co2 pods.

That's the mentality of some Co2 users. Everything is disposible, trash the planet. And release more Co2, like we need that.

I stopped and picked it all up, lest another cyclist get sickened.

Ahh, but a pump user might discard their tube ;)

People who litter are a**holes! I use CO2 and I never leave them behind. Some people who use pumps I am sure have left tubes on the side of the road. I use CO2, I don't litter, and I am sure some pump users AND some CO2 users trash the planet. I don't want to sound like an a**hole but let's not generalize here based on pump vs. CO2 usage.

I did 80 miles this morning.

I probably saw half a dozen empty co2 carts on the side of the road.

I didn't see any frame pumps.
