So could it be that Gee has to more or less pay the buyout himself? We know that Gee will earn more at Ineos so his old team certainly wants to have a part of that. And they are in a comfortable postion because they have written him off and can only gain something in the legal disputes.
Yeah even if the UCI arbitration panel and CAS say that he "only" has to pay a more sensible figure like two or three million or something, that's still a fair whack of money and not many teams at this time of the season have the funds for that plus the wages and space in their roster.
One option I thought might be a solution to a lot of those problems would be a trade. "We'll let you have Derek Gee if you give us Carlos Rodriguez" or whoever and there might be some smaller amounts of money trading hands too. Obviously it's not as simple as that, but you get the idea.
Cause getting a good GC rider/climber would be much better for NSN than a few million in the bank when then's nobody on the market to spend it on. They must be trying to get somebody anyway otherwise why not confirm your squad for 2026.
