So could it be that Gee has to more or less pay the buyout himself? We know that Gee will earn more at Ineos so his old team certainly wants to have a part of that. And they are in a comfortable postion because they have written him off and can only gain something in the legal disputes.

Yeah even if the UCI arbitration panel and CAS say that he "only" has to pay a more sensible figure like two or three million or something, that's still a fair whack of money and not many teams at this time of the season have the funds for that plus the wages and space in their roster.

One option I thought might be a solution to a lot of those problems would be a trade. "We'll let you have Derek Gee if you give us Carlos Rodriguez" or whoever and there might be some smaller amounts of money trading hands too. Obviously it's not as simple as that, but you get the idea.

Cause getting a good GC rider/climber would be much better for NSN than a few million in the bank when then's nobody on the market to spend it on. They must be trying to get somebody anyway otherwise why not confirm your squad for 2026.

Technically a rider (or anyone) who breaks their contract always has to pay out the compensation themselves... (in practice obviously the next team or company often pays (part of) it).

Lidl trek have seen the valuation of 30 million for Derek Gee and decided no problem. He could be on his way according to Daniel Benson, maybe he will lead the Ardennes with Skelmose Ayuso Nys and Ciccone!

Just imagine if they have had this kind of almost unlimited budget for 2021. The bidding war against Adams for Froome's services would have been bonkers.

There's still time, although my hope is for 2026 Froomey to take a dip in the BHS - PL Beton Bornholm rejuvenation pool, then maybe Lidl in 2027.

Anyway the Giro looks quite good for Derek Gee, hopefully they didn't tell Ayuso or Skelmose about any of this.
