Just going by wikipedia and "Marco Innocenti, L'Italia del 1948: quando De Gasperi batté Togliatti, Mursia, 1997, p. 133"

It's hard to really know actually.

In Jean-Paul Ollivier's "Fausto Coppi: la gloire et les larmes" it's stated that he defended atheism but he reported a comment by Coppi who said that though he didn't attend mass, he made several gifts to local churches out of genuine conviction. I don't remember the exact words though, I don't have my JPO book with me at the moment but I don't think I'm betraying his thoughts, there. Bartali once invited him to visit Pope Pius XII and told him it would do him good.

He also received the Last Sacraments. Though I don't know if he was really conscious in his last hours.
