Does Wiggins need to "win" the time trials?

What does Wiggins need to do in the time trial to win the tour

My question is a simple one: if Wiggins doesn't "win" the time trial (have a better combined time than Cadel) can he still win the tour or is beating Cadel in the time trials a necessity?

well it's easy to win when you are at 95% and the other are at 80%...
he must win time on the TT because no one is going to make his life easy on the climbs

He must win in all probability as hehas never really shown anything to suggest he can match Evans in terms of climbing.
So even winning may not be enough but it will certainly give him a shot.

it won't be necessary because i still think he will drop most if not everyone of the top contenders uphill....of course we'll see

but it's a must to beat froomy in the ITT's,that's the biggest problem.

I would agree but too many posters on here dont seem to think so, so I stay safe for now; only start hyping proper when stage 11 comes around;)

Beating Froome in everything is the problem for Wiggins but in truth it is a problem for Sky as well.

Well except Dauphine 2011 where he took time out of Evans in the mountain stages in addition to the TT (with IIRC more MTFs than this year's Tour...)

jens_attacks - like your style ;)

Wiggins to beta Tony in the TTes?
Give me some of the stuff you are smoking :D
How could you possibly state such a statement when you then claim Tony is a contender:p;)

What bavarian rider said was kinda true. Tony and Cancellara seem to be in better shape now and have well recovered from their crashes.
They should have a slight edge over wiggins for the TTs.

I think he was trying to make another point.....

The way I see it, Wiggins either -

- Wins the Tour and is very strong in the Mountains; or
- Wins the Tour but relies on his TTing; or
- Does not win the Tour

I think the first and 3rd options are both more likely than the 2nd option.
If he is strong in the Mountains it is still doubtful he will be stronger than his primary contender and therefore will still rely on his TT to win the Tour.

True but this thread is about Wiggins beating Evans' TT time.

Someone needs to improve his reading and comprehension skills. The thread is about TT against GC riders. Neither Martin nor Cancellara fall in that group.

I wouldn't mind that kind of situation if we watch a replay of 1986 with Chris and Brad attacking each other in consecutive days :D

Let's generalize this: any rider who wants to win the Tour or any stage race needs to put time on his rivals, regardless of he wins the stage or not. Yesterday was a good example. There is no time bonuses for winning stages.

Ditto! Just like in other sports if want. to win you need to score. more than the opposition.
