Modern day colonial powers don't wish to accept responsability for their past wrongdoings; Such is the case of Haiti. The United states, Canada, Europe, and the United Nations have decided to grab DR as a punching bag, and to blame it for all the poverty and misery France left over. So far we host about 2 million citizens (20% of our population); most of whom are hard working but unskilled workers w/o documents &/or health certificates.
The whole scenario is complicated by a corrupt DR goverment more occupied with swindling public property and commiting all kinds of rackets w/o fear of prosecution. The population at large is made up of mulattos wishing to go abroad and leave the premises to those afromentioned citizens (pariahs in their own land) and a whole array of 'investors' such as huge mining concerns (Barrick Gold, Encore Xstrata, etc) with open sky mining practices destroying our weak enviroment, poisoning rivers, and stiffing the Goverment. The next anarquist socialist revolution in the western hemisphere will take place here. Watch out for the spillage all over. M.A.D.

Politician's love graft & entrepreneurs: a privileged class

The ruling plutocracy, pardon me; cleptocracy, is armoured with impunity from the Judiciary and the corrupt legislature. The masses are prejudiced in favor of illegal aliens who provide the menial workforce with exploited men & women w/o perks and benefits accrued to labor everywhere.
"Un Gobierno sumiso, genuflexo, pusilánime, coprófafo, & eunuco" who allows foreign corporations to practice oligopolies in strategic services such as electricity and major public works. Foreigners w/o proper license can practice medicine, law, engineering accounting, etc. Debt is increased exponentially as the goverment sells international junk(SOBERANOS') bonds all the time, which are underwriten' by the J.P. Morgan's of lies & deception.

Tourism

Like all Caribbean Islands, DR was part of the power struggle among European empires from 1492 on. Spain, France, UK, US, ...discovered, colonized, invaded, etc. Seeking windfall profits; sugar, coffee, tobacco, gold, silver,.....cheap with enslaved labour; either native or brought over from Africa.
Today, free zones and tourism provide the hard currency the so called êlites demand in their quest to mingle, to schmooze, to establish a rapport with the Int'l Jet Set they wish to imitate. Most beaches have been privatized and destroyed by the intensive usage and solid waste produced by huge hotel chains w/o proper sewage systems. Hippies & hipsters come in order to engage under age children in all kinds of queer and kinky sex.
The Island has become a place where drugs are stored in their trek from south America to the places where phinxs seek to self destroy. Money laundering have found heaven on earth.

More Generals than USA / NATO combined

The Goverment is held hostage to about 10 economic groups (FAMILIES) who happen to be engaged in all profit making endeavors. The Church (Catholic) & the Military, made up mostly of mercenaries and hitmen with the task of wiping out poverty striken masses if they protest (when they aren't serving politicians and entrepreneurs as chauffeurs, dog walkers, and farm watchdogs); together with the Emba$$y, are the deciding factors in all electorate processes (carnivals).
Politicians enter public posts broke, and walk out wealthy; and that is seen as the most natural outcome. People would consider naive anyone who wouldn't benefit from the opportunity as public servant.
DEBT is 51% of GNP (~50 thousand million dollars) and is rising exponentially as the GOV most support about 600 thousand public employees with no duties to fulfill or whatsoever (mostly) as any task is sub-contracted because such employees have no skills at all, other than attend meetings and VOTE every 4 years.

Chinese Model

The ruling Partido Liberación Dominicana (PLD) party is a former marxist not leninist group of power seeking individuals who followed USSR while they were able to grab perks such as Ladas', and other commodities such as scholarships in Iron Curtain Colleges and Universities.
Once the Berlin Wall was sent to the smithereens, they followed their own Perestroika and their own Glasnot. They became neo-liberals, made a 180 degrees turn to the right, and joined the ranks of those who sold out the sweat, tears, and blood of those who suffered prison, exile, and death while following them.
All of the sudden they went from rags to riches under the leadership of Sheik Lionel I bin bin al Fakir (AKA le Pashá); swindling away public property and getting the once proud land into debt and despair disguised as economic growth for the ruling élites and their escuderos, testaferros, and pistoleros'...........They went to bed with those senshi' malvados...LOL

The cat OD' on his master's smack & crank

The dude passed out, dropping his MED' on the floor. His cat swallowed the smashed oxycontin and methamphetamine he craves for and needs in order to pedal his bike. The poor creature passed out.
