Not so much these days, but I am wondering what they took during the 60's to present day. I'm NOT a fan, but I am curious what those guys took back then from a historical perspective and how did it compare to other sporting disciplines. The first guys ran shine, this much I know.

Only in The General Lee (good ol' 00). At least they had Uncle Jesse and Daisy working it over...

"Doping in NASCAR". Greatest clinic thread title ever. :D

Although, I must admit that the "Jens Voigt Threatens World..."* thread title comes in a close second!

*as viewed from the cyclingnews.com/index page in all its truncated glory. When someone replies to it, of course.

I heard some teams are working with Ferrari!

Doping exists throughout Sport

1. In the late 60s , 70s, and 80s The East Germans gave their young female swimmers (aged 13 or so) the anabolic steroid Oral Turinabol and injections of testosterone. Most of these athletes were lied to about the drugs and told they were vitamins. The swimmers won a ton of medals in Olympic and World championships. They were eventually caught. Many of the swimmers had negative health erffects suchs as liver cancer, organ damage, and inferitlity. After 1989 a fund was set up in Germany proper of $2.8 M to compensate the athletes. So many athletes applied that each athlete only got about $10,000. One swimmer Carola Nitschke returned her Olympic medals voluntarily and asked her name be removed from the record books. You rarely see that kind of class today.

2. In 1983 the Pan Am Games came up with a new test for steriods and a ton of athletes were caught especially weight lifters, and especially Canadian weigh lifters. Nineteen athletes were tested + for steroids.

3. In the 60s the TDF riders began to use amphetamines + alcohol, culminating in the tragic death of Tom Simpson in the 1967 Tour. He became so dehydrated he died. This should have been a huge warning to the peloton on subsequent drug use but it was not.

4. From 1988 to 2000 numerous US athletes were allowed to compete in the Olympics and international events in spite of positive tests before hand. Dr. Wade Exum in a US Olympic Committee Report blew the lid on this identifying 19 athletes who did so. It was pretty hypocritical of the US who were always publicly condemning drug use in sport.

PEDs are endemic across all sports, probably including NASCAR.

I don't know what they took, but I know how many:

NASCAR and Performance Enhancing Drugs
There are no doubt several pharmaceuticals that can enhance the “raw skills… all bundled in reflex and nerve.” Just ask the U.S. military about performance enhancing drugs such as Provigil and Adderall that are mandatory for some fighter pilots.

Not just the pilots. Army has done it as well and anti-depressants are in common use today to keep combat troops amped up during operations. During my time we were given doses of ephidrine and made to perform different tasks after extended periods of sleep deprevation.

They all take vagisil

You're supposed to rubbing it on your tender bits.

"Taking it" might mean actually eating it. Easy mistake as it comes in a toothpaste tube. I don't recomend it, it tastes like *ss. Although my tongue stopped itching, and my breath was a lot fresher...

"Mandatory" Adderall? I know that pilots take it, but I've never heard that they've been ordered (FORCED) to take it. Any citations to back that one up?

Well I guess the Daytona 500 is just around the corner, cause I happened on a Daytona 500 from the 70's on ESPN a while back. It was towards the end and I was wondering how those guys could maintain their focus and hold off fatigue. Pretty much all top level auto and bike racing is a life and death proposition, so their putting it on the line. I suspected speed was used back in the day, not unlike cycling. Nowadays I would bet the house Provigil is part of the program. Same with pro chess.

No, no citation. It's actually a quote from the linked website. A website dedicated to steroid ...ehm...discussions and hatin' on WADA apparently-by a former bodybuilder if you can believe it. The only other article he has on the website is about adderall use in academia. What? Students are using adderall to stay up all night?!! It appears the author has made it from whole cloth.
