Anyone with any knowledge of doping in professional baseball?

Minor leaguers are subjected to tighter controls than major leaguers(and guys on teams 40 man rosters).

I haven't got time now, but if I have time tomorrow I'll look and try and find the article I read a while back about Marcus Stroman who served time for a doping offense in 2012(I think) and was added to the teams 40 man roster in 2013.

From memory the article said that if he was on the 40 man roster, he wouldn't have failed the test(although my memory on that part may be a little off, so I apologize in advance if it is)

so what are the chances of any of the FIFA World Cup team players getting "poppped" for some sort of PED ?

Wasn't certain Spanish footballers on that Fuentes /De Moral list way back when operation puerto was ongoing ?

Negative 435.26%

Cleanest World cup ever.

20 gazillion samples taken. None positive.

None actually tested but that won't actually matter.

0.01%

FIFA are smart and know that the spectacle PEDs make possible appeals to sports fans. Trying to weed out doping would be stupid and counterproductive.

Thanks, I'd like to see that. Do you have any knowledge of what PEDs are most useful to baseball players, pitchers in particular?

"The Blue Jays’ third-ranked prospect, last August while he was in Vancouver, was tested under terms of the more stringent minor-league program and was caught using a banned stimulant"

"I was in contact with Alex throughout the whole process. Alex let me know, if I was on the 40-man roster it wouldn’t have resulted in any suspension, it’s just part of the minor-league drug program"

The part about Stroman is in the section called 'The essay'.

As for drugs that players may use, I'd say stuff like Anabolic steroids are used, I mean stuff like HGH is known to strengthen joints and tissue, and help to maintain muscle without any heavy lifting during the season. In the season pitchers probably don't want to do that much stuff with their pitching arm, aside from pitch.

To wrap up my previous post, now Chael Sonnen has announced his retirement from MMA, apparently to include giving up his position as a presenter with the UCF. Which, to me, seems a bit rash. Dana has as much as said Sonnen potentially could be his successor as major domo of the UFC. I fail to see where one failed drug test would scupper that possibility, especially with Sonnen's world-class gift for self-promotion.

What makes the whole TRT issue a particularly sore spot for MMA is that there might be a medical connection between the pugilistic sports and low testosterone (more specifically, hypogonadism).

Modern medicine has determined that repeated blows to the head can cause atrophy of the brain stem, which interrupts the HPG-loop, which results in hypogonadism/LowT. In fact, this is the organic cause of a condition that has since The Great War been termed, "Shell Shock," which previously had been regarded as a primarily psychological condition. Except now we know better, because there has been a disproportionate number of young lads returned from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, otherwise healthy and seemingly uninjured, but suffering from severe hypogonadism. Which presents with many of the same physical symptoms as Shell Shock. And CT scans and MRIs confirm their condition results from atrophy of the brain stem, presumably caused by too frequent exposure to concussive forces in the form of IEDs. They've been too frequently beat about the head.

There has been one clinical study (and AFAIK, only the one) that failed to find a connection between combat sports and hypogonadism, but failing to find a connection is not the same as proving that one does not exist. So while the management and promoters of sports such as prizefighting and MMA are hanging their hats on that one study, and effectively sticking their heads in the sand on the subject, the science IMHO is far from settled.

Future MMA hall-of-famer Georges St. Pierre is on hiatus from the sport, which he has stated is largely due to his dissatisfaction with UFC's failure to effectively deal with the drug cheats. I'm not sure whether this latest rash of positives is evidence he was spot-on, or if it proves UFC has put its house in order.

"If I talk, Spain would be stripped of the World Cup and European Championship."

Spanish clubs Barca, Real, and others are well known to employ doping doctors on staff, as does the Spanish national club.

I am sure that doping is rife in football (weak testing, stamina sport), but some jurisdictions are more "organized". This is mainly due to national officials being part of the cover-up (courts, politicians, national sports organizations,...).

Great article, well researched.

<conspiracy theory>
More testosterone = more aggression. Exactly what you want in people in a war zone vs chickening out, right?

Dose up the rat packs and send 'em into combat.

Thanks for the link.

Would you agree that out of the 4 major American sports, the MLB has the lowest % of PED users, and it's easiest to be successful in baseball without PED use?

Since PEDS are less effective if you dope every day, I suspect that a good strategy for a favorite world cup team, would be to "peak" after the group play when you play the better teams. Spain's misfortune was to be scheduled against one of the other elite teams at the start of the tournament.

I expect that the Dutch wanted revenge against the Spaniards, so may have been willing to peak early, even though it may not have been the ideal strategy to win the tournament.

I dunno. Looked like they were just, a lot, better and Spain's defense went home.

Reminds me, a week ago there was an article about Sneijder. Van Gaal said to him that he had to become more fit to be considered for the World Championship. When the national team tested him last month, they couldn't believe in what great shape he was, they had to re-check their equiptment because they couldn't believe it, his improvement was so great.

Then again, last year after going to Man United, Van Persie bragged how he gained 4 kilo (!) in muscle mass in a couple of months since he left Arsenal. He said he didn't spent any more time lifting weights, he just became more fit on his own.

Sometimes I wonder, either these guys are extremely naive about how these things can get interpreted, or they are so protected, they don't even care what people think.
