Reminds me, a week ago there was an article about Sneijder. Van Gaal said to him that he had to become more fit to be considered for the World Championship. When the national team tested him last month, they couldn't believe in what great shape he was, they had to re-check their equiptment because they couldn't believe it, his improvement was so great.

Then again, last year after going to Man United, Van Persie bragged how he gained 4 kilo (!) in muscle mass in a couple of months since he left Arsenal. He said he didn't spent any more time lifting weights, he just became more fit on his own.

Sometimes I wonder, either these guys are extremely naive about how these things can get interpreted, or they are so protected, they don't even care what people think.
doping is not an issue in soccer land.
not for the players, not for the federations, nor for the press.
case in point: Ribery
Last week the French federation complained that throughout the season Bayern Munich has been giving Ribery too many injections to let him play through injury.
This was reported on very briefly and very neutrally in the German press.
One paragraph without comment, in the middle of other world cup news.
Not a single word or hint at doping. no suspicion. nobody asking any further questions. nobody cares!

Young England players going down with cramp in the World Cup last night while Italian over 30s cruise around the pitch. Hodgson has got to get his preparation sorted.

Just saw on Slovenian TV that the Italian "fitness coach" is Srdjan Djordjevič, a known doping doctor. If you want more information about him, just search this forum, he has been mentioned in a few threads already. No wonder Italy were well prepared.

The Italy/England game looked very slow compared to the other games I have watched. Once they got clear possession of the ball, the players would slow down to a walking pace. Very different style of play than the Spaniards 4 years ago.

I also noticed very few "embellishments" from Italy. Very different from 2006.

Cycling only gets singled out here. The Ribery one is a classic one. Cortisone and painkillers to treat injuries to get players on the pitch goes on wholesale in football.

Thomas gets painkillers to ride in the Tour last year and Sky's use of tramadol has been highlighted but not a word is said when the likes of Rooney gets a painkilling injection to play against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Last year you had Schuster(was manager at Malaga at the time) and Lehmann say doping practices should be allowed to treat injuries. Can you imagine the reaction to that if someone at the head of a cycling team said it?

And when you say journalists should be criticised for this, I put Walsh and Kimmage firmly in it. They're sports journalists and Kimmage in particular has been critical of painkilling use in cycling but you wouldn't see him go over to United or other Premiership clubs and hold them account for doing the exact same thing.

No, lets stick with poor old cycling.

The South Koreans are the most obvious to me. They are just running machines. If they had any skill, they would win the whole thing.

And that's why one of their players went down with cramp.

I didn't see any fitness difference with the Russians. It was a fair result in the end.

They had a few guys (Park Ji Sung and a couple of others) with some skill in '02 and nearly made the final

Towards the end of the game there was a statistic on the screen that said the russians had been running significantly more.

As far as I remember, they were extremely lucky getting through the Italy match though. As in suspiciously lucky.

Froome-dawg will be on cured cabbage for his final gain on the margin for his Tour triumph over pistolero.

no way pistolero will have kimchi. he will have his boef tapas, mixed language metaphors a little tortured not as bad as g-bay

My guess is Spain were warned no doping the WC, cos Brazil are going to win it at home.

I will be very surprised if Brazil dont make it to the final.

A reference to doping from Danny Murphy commentating for the BBC.

"I'm bit sure what the Chileans got through customs, the Uruguayans didn't get their chocolate spread".

I'd like to know what he really thinks.

I think Spain are on a bonus to go out at this stage. Blatter is paying it :D

Someone should tweet Piti, Bertie and J-Rod to say that it is possible for some Spanish to 'participate' clean :D

looks like south american teams have the best "preparation" for this tournament. Not that that should be a surprise to anyone.

I will laugh my *** off so hard if Australia beat Spain.

This was a side the BBC pundits were calling the greatest side of all time after the Euro 2012 final and them beating Italy 4-0.

probably because they won an unprecedented 3 tournaments in a row. I'm sure you predicted them to get hammered before it happen, though.

I hope the referees stop rigging it for Brazil. Probably doped to the eye balls as well.

The point was there has obviously been a dramatic drop off in form.

As if I was referencing a 4-0 win against Italy as proof they were receiving undeserved plaudits.

Why would I even begin to predict a flop after a 4-0 win in the final. Completely goes against what I was saying.

If they lose to Australia this will be as much an unprecedented decline as any decline ever.
