I posted that earlier quote just because it amused me, but the more I read about this whole Rio call up the sketchier it sounds. Apparently he really is missing the England call up because he's got some 'pre-planned' medical treatment booked, which can't be done while he's with the England doctors/medical team because it's got to take place in a clinic in Milton Keynes (WTF?), and the exact nature of the treatment is a secret.

Honestly I neither know nor care if there is an innocent or nefarious explanation for this, but imagine what the press/fans would say if a top cyclist, from one of the biggest teams in Europe, who in the past had served a ban for literally running away from drug testers (sorry, forgetting), announced in the press that they were choosing to miss an important race (say a semi-classic) because he needed to medically prepare for the rest of the season with a secret treatment that could only be performed in a specific clinic? I don't think it would be pretty. . .

It reminds me of when Hein said to **** Pound:

"If spectators want to see the TDF at 25km per hour then riders don't have to prepare but if spectators want to see it at 42km per hour then riders can't do it without preparation".

Except he's doing it for the whole world to see, the press are terrified or Ferguson as it is.

Was Rio Ferdinands 8 month ban for missing one random drug test or for missing three?

Just wondering, I usually see it referenced as one but I've seen it mentioned a couple of times as three.

If it was one was the punishment so harsh (compared to missing a out of competition test in an Olympic event) because he declared his whereabouts?

Didn't Giggs play in the Olympics?

Ryan Giggs stepped down from playing for Wales in 2007 to concentrate on United, although he did play for Team GB the London Olympics.

To me there is a trend with United though.

Google is your friend

Its because the testers arrived and he disappeared off.

It doesn't seem like a coincidence to me that of that generation Gary Neville was the first to retire yet he reports in his autobiography being offered and refusing special treatments playing for England in France 98.

I suspect he may have been kept out of the loop on special treatments at united.

Perhaps the testing in San Marino is more rigorous. Are CONI involved?

Marie-George Buffet, sports minister at the time of the 1998 Soccer World Cup, says that she and the French government were under intense pressure (from the press) not to perform drug testing on the French team in the leadup to the competition. She says that at no time did her ministry give instructions not to do testing.

She then goes on to reveal that she had to write a letter to the attention of Hein Verbruggen to state that the French anti-doping laws would be suspended if France obtained the 2008 Olympic games. Meetings were held between French IOC members Killy and Drut and then Prime Minister Jospin to ensure the letter was done. Even after the letter was handed to Verbruggen (at the top of the Eiffel Tower) there was continuing pressure on Jospin.

Is this the same sports minister who in 1998 made a big thing of cycling being dirty, and football clean?

It would be interesting to see how the performances of players coming to and leaving United (and other major clubs with money and/or labs). I mentioned the example of van Persie earlier in this thread (who has gained 4kg of muscle since arriving in the summer). However I was wondering about what happened to those two defenders who went to Sunderland a season or two ago. I have not really heard much of them. Did their performances drop or did they stay the same (not a big Sunderland fan, so I don't really know).

An example of a player who remains pretty good even after leaving United is Berbatov, who at Fulham now remains enigmatic but continues to show his class.

They are garbage (mind you I might be biased being a Newcastle Fan). Just like the two players we got from them, Simpson and Obertan. Ferguson very rarely lets his top players go. When he does (Ince, Beckham, Staam, Van Nistelrooy) it is normally because they have crossed him or some club pays silly money (Ronaldo).

lol, arsene Wenger on eurosport was asked to ask a question to his former player Gilberto Silva, who is 35 and playing in Brazil.

He asks "Gilberto, I see you are still playing football over there. What is your secret, could you send it to me"

Gilberto is now 36. Wenger once said he covered the most ground of any player on the pitch for Arsenal when they won the league unbeaten in 03/04. Then the following season they signed Flamini and he beat the beep test record that Gilberto had. On one weekend in the Premiership in 2008 Sport Relief were sponsoring each player £30 for each mile covered. Flamini covered the most ground of any player that weekend(over 8 miles). His stamina was astonishing.

Just recently I see Kagawa beat Park's beep test record at United which is no mean feat I can tell you.

Im not saying anything against Gilberto Silva, more that Wenger has made some comments on doping in football (and gets a lot of support from here for them btw, showed a lot of moxy) and im guessing when he asked Silva for the "secret" - a term that has in cycling often been used as a front for doping, i thought it was a funny moment.

What is Uniteds bleep test record?

Agree, besides Tom English, no journalist of note has given any attention to his comments. I thought this was an excellent column last month by English contrasting the differing stances on the issue of doping in football between Wenger and Ferguson.

I don't know United's record but just to correct one thing from my post above. Kagawa actually has the best since Beckham left. I know Beckham also beat everyone in the England squad at the bleep test when they were training before the World Cup in 2006 which shows he is particular strong in this area.

Of course they wouldn't want to release it just like they wouldn't with the ProZone stats but it still came out.

Great quote to finish off the article:

Kagawa has now been put on a programme to increase his strength and help his adaptation to the Premier League since his aerobic capabilities are, obviously, not in question.

Those silly Germans, don't use any strength at all during their football

This david beckham?

Discussing his ability to perform at the top level, Beckham, who will wear the number 32 shirt, said: "I can run around. I've not lost any of my pace because, to be honest, I've not had a lot of pace during my career.

I don't see how that's relevant. Speed and stamina are two different things.
