There was a hillarious piece on sky sports news today about how sports science has drastically improved the fitness of players over the last 10 years. They show a former pro claiming he smoked, drank as a footballer, then show "sports science today" with some super ice machines etc is

Apparently the average Premier league player runs significantly more in a game today than they did a decade or 2 ago.

No mention of medicine of course.

Wonder if for the next "documentary" sky will get some former pros to talk about how cyclists were always drinking and smoking before kerrison came along.

That was Julian Dicks a proper thug/hard mad (take your pick) on the pitch in the late 80s early nineties. had a sweet left foot though, fairly typical of the booze culture of English Football at the time, I beleive Kenny Dalgleish paid a lot of money for him. (EDIT: Sorry Souness not Dalgleish)

The thing that raised suprised me about the report was the improvements in sprints/distance covered over last 7 years.

We like to think of Dicksey as a minor Hammers legend, hard, but not too often vicious.;)

But, I do think most Hammers would agree that we always thought he was a few pence short of the full pound.

Watching Borussia / Real right now. The way these guys are running all over the pitch all the time is insane. They sure are "prepared" for the match. It's a bit like watching the EPO days in cycling.

Deco failed a doping test  im surprised they caught someone with such a big name, although he is old and pretty irrelevant now.

Didn't beckenbauer admit taking amphetemines and that?

I think there was a story about the German team having players who tested positive for ephedrine in 1966 but I can't ever remember Beckenbauer admitting to the above though.

I don't know if you know Stanley Matthews but it was widely suggested he used amphetamines and Harry Gregg the United keeper from Northern Ireland who survived the Munich air disaster in 1958 admitted he used it when he was playing and said it was used throughout football in England at the time.

Just regarding Beckenbauer's comments above, typical of him where he shoots first, thinks second.

Still decent when I saw him in the Copa Libertadores last year. Something else I noticed from the piece above, Carlos Alberto with Vasco da Gama also failed a test which I didn't know about until now. You might remember him playing for Mourinho at Porto when they won the Champions League in 2004. A very good young player at the time who never really kicked on and I didn't know what happened him until now. A serial diver who drove me up the walls watching him and I remember Ferguson being livid with his behaviour when United got knocked out by Porto in the year that they won it. I like to know what he tested positive for.

Just another take on all this, I did read a while back about a few other positves as well last year in Brazil and I wonder are they stepping this up in preparation for the World Cup in 2014 with pressure from FIFA. Remember FIFA plan on introducing biological passports for that and I know there are not happy with the development of some of the stadiums where Jerome Valcke said they are behind time so I know they are under intense scrutiny from FIFA at the moment.

EDIT: Had a look around for what Carlos Alberto got popped for.

Vasco da Gama midfielder Carlos Alberto faces a two-year ban from football after failing a doping test.

The 28-year-old was found to have traces of illegal substances hydrochlorothiazide and metabolic tamoxifen in test samples taken after Vasco de Gama's 3-2 victory over Fluminense on March 2, the Rio de Janeiro Football Federation said on Tuesday.

Hydrochlorothiazide is known as a masking agent while metabolic tamoxifen blocks the production of the female hormone estrogen.

Not surprising, a former Porto player said last week on a Brazilian talk show that he was forced to dope at Porto in the year Porto won their other champions league in the 80's.

We are talking about a club that has a president that makes the heads of the UCI look like good guys. He has been president for more then 30 years and has been involved in all types of corruptions. There are even some audio videos on youtube taped by the portuguese police with him buying games and referees but he always gets away with it because the portuguese justice system makes the spanish look good

Deco got popped for some bull**** and the article already says he got it from some supplement.

as for brazil, i was thinking more the other way, that pressure would be stepping up for a good doctor to make sure the team is in tip top condition for an event that has far greater political and cultural worth to brazil than the health of a few players who if they want to dope, is their own choice.

And yet not a single lie in my post and all i said can be backed with video and audio available on youtube.

He seems on the same level as Luciano Moggi, if not worse and that says something.

I would say Pinto da Costa is a bit worse, the guy is pretty ruthless. He paid some men to beat to death the guy that went to the police with some proof to start the investigation, luckily they failed.

I reckon Red Rom would give them all a run for their money, what with his private army and cruise missiles installed on yachts and extensive ties to the Bratva.
