As someone noted on this board a year ago (viewtopic.php?p=1424240#p1424240), "Kristoff has won the bunch sprint in all the long classics he has done since summer 2012." (Obviously that is no longer true after MSR 2015, but the point still remains that he has been very good in sprints after long hard races since at least 2012.)

The theory at the time, that he only could win short stages, was probably a false conclusion based on random events. He just happened to get it right in a few short stages at the time, but there is little evidence that he struggled with distance, as he for example was 4th in Vattenfall Cyclassics in his first season as pro, which was his first decent result in a sprint.

In his first GT, Giro 2011, he also had his best result (4th on the stage Gatto won ahead of Contador) on a long, hard stage.

In 2012, he rode his first ever RVV and was 15th after leading out Freire, and he was third in the olympics...

So yea, he has improved quite steadily since he started actually.
