Apparently, Vincenza and Venice renounced their candicacy for the 2020, and the UCI asked if the Dutch north eastern provinces, which were originally aiming for 2023, to accelerate their time line. The organisation would need to get 10 million euros together to make it happen.

Gotta say. Seems like a terrible worlds in the making.

The races organized there usually end up in massive crosswind battles. see for inspiration gopro footage of last weekends ronde van groningen for inspiration. just hope for some windy weather and it'll be a real hard men race.

Groenewegen, Jakobsen and Van Poppel will be the podium ;).

Actually a bunchsprint will be a good for the dutch chances to win.

With the Tokyo Olympics allegedly being a race for climbers, I wouldn't mind an easier route at the Worlds.
But this is probably too easy, unless the weather helps us.

Huh? Unless my memory is failing me, the Tokyo course is pretty easy.

There could be a lot of wind, there are also some cobbles (although in perfect shape) and there is that VAM hill they use in "De rond van Drenthe".

what is the backup plan of UCI?

Yeah, the likely Tokyo course is even harder than Innsbruck:
265.59 Km long with 5246 m elevation gain...

No idea.

But the WCs seems to be struggling host backing lately

There is no official course for Tokyo, yet.

The proposal looks not so easy. :D -> https://twitter.com/LasterketaBurua/status/928303364110249984/photo/1?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Oh my bad, apparently I had the old proposal in my head apparently. The current proposal looks super difficult indeed!
I looked at it, thought "eeeh", then realised this is with 5 man teams

250 km or so of crosswind racing would actually be absolutely incredible, but the fact that there is no guarantee for that to happen is ofc a huge problem. The VAM climb would at least be something. It would at least make this route better than 2011 or 2016

That kind of route with potential crosswinds and the VAM berg in the circuit would be good, not every WC needs to be the same and you already have the Olympic RR.
Of course cobbles would be always welcome, I recently watched a small video of the Giro del Lazio (1993, if I remember correctly) and back then they actually rode over the huge cobblestones of the Via Appia Antica, it looks a bit over the top, but still awesome.

I guess there are always those countries willing to throw money at them to find some validation of their dubious governments through sports

Boring as ***. But perfect opportunity for a Groenewegen/Jakobsen/Van Poppel podium.

edit: 2020? Might also be the year Van der Poel rides. Just add some Groningen/Drenthe mud roads then

Yeah, not really getting too excited for this. Its a day for downgrading the routes, unfortunately...... Still have fond memories of Vicenza in 2015 when Gilbert won.

It doesn't seem like Veneto is withdrawing their bid after all.
They probably saw the news about Drenthe and thought, "god no, we must not let this happen" :D

2020 is now set to take place on UCI's parking lot in Aigle. Another giant fail...
