Not to rock the boat, but regaining consciousness does not equal that he's going to be all right. He's probably going to be all right, but unfortunately brain damage after head trauma, such as swelling, often only manifests itself a while after the actual trauma. In this case, he'll be under medical supervision, so potential problems will most likely be noticed. However, he would not be the first one to suddenly drop down the next day.

In fact, a guy from my former high school once took a knee to the head during a soccer/football match, felt fine and finished the match, only to go into coma during the night. Eventually, he died.
