New to early starts, what exactly do you do when your body says "hey, it's 7 am time for a dump mate" when you've been in the saddle for 2 hours and have another 2 to go?

Option 1: Wake up really early so the "urge" to go arrives before you set out on the ride
Options 2: Laxative the night before so you go right away at 5 am

Mods: I'm not being immature this is an honest enquiry ;)

I've gone option 2 but then noticed my bowel movements interrupted for the next day which can't be good.

Coffee.

As I train in the early morning, I always start with 2 cappucino's (at home, so get what I want, when I want it...), read CN for 10 minutes and then get the business done.

Well I cant see laxative abuse on a regular basis can be very good.
I would suggest getting up at least an hour before you go out, eat some cereals and toast, have a coffee and then try and go. Your bowels should be ready then. This is my habit and I have never had a problem.

This is a habit I've used for over 30 years and it has rarely failed me too! :D

I've been able to adjust my schedule, mainly through eating more fiber and well holding till the desired time of day. Another practice is breathing exercises to get things moving if its just around the corner and you want to get it in an early gear.

I hate early rides/races as they usually hit my schedule at the wrong time unless I start to adjust it some, either by getting up earlier, a quick set of sit ups, crunches help if its not there yet, but eating breakfast earlier also makes it go off earlier, then again you need to have it be movable hence the extra fiber but not TOO much.

I'd ditch the laxatives unless they agree with you or know what you're doing, in a pinch you'll probably end up ruining your race/ride. Much like the old saying, don't try anything new on race day, it applies here as well.

this is actually a good topic. If I start too early and don't get a morning growler before 4 hours in the saddle I am in a bad way by the end of the day

My time seems to be around 10am. But if I follow a similar routine to greasy monkey I manage to do the business and don't experience any issues during an early ride.

do you have any empirical data other than pure observation to support your claim?

A moving thread....

Back in the day I found a cigarette first thing would kick start the metabolism,,,, not an option now..

I seem able to "dump on demand" ( + -) most days, but for others I ride with we can often plan to be near facilities, park w / toilet, truck stops etc. at intervals. Helps a bit.
