How can cannondale survive in the worldtour with 7 million dollars? Sagan earns almost their entire budget
They have a shortfall of $7m, that's not their whole budget. Their total budget is presumably 3-4 times that, as it's a naming sponsor they're after, and they have 4 other partners who are "still committed."

So their total budget is probably in the $20-30 million range. Probably on the smaller end of that, as they must have one of the lower payrolls on the WT right now. (If they don't, then Vaughters is overpaying them, and it's no wonder they're in the red).

Their total budget for 2017 was $15 million (the lowest in the WT). For 2018 they have $9 million already secured, so it would add up to $16 million with the $7 million they are looking for.

And Sagan alone earns around as much as all 27 Cannondale riders together in 2017. The results the team managed to squeeze out of that tiny budget are quite impressive this year.

Re: Cannondale-Drapac

Didn't Doug Ellis once profess admiration of Thom Wiesel for his financial endorsement of LA/Postal (and attempt to inject American cyclists into the European pro ranks ?)

I assumed that they were as good as dead once they announced the shortfall and the release of riders from 2018 contracts. Their announcement today of 2 million (in matching funds to crowdfunded donations) from a sponsor makes me think they may just possibly make it for another year.

Never trust Crowdfunding - It's in effect people making pledges to donate money - History shows that not all the pledges come through and it's no way to run a professional WT team.

It's absolutely not a reliable way to fund an ongoing enterprise on the scale of a pro sports team. However, it doesn't strike me as entirely beyond the bounds of possibility that it could raise say 2 or 3 million dollars as a once off, and that the rest of the money could be scrabbled together. They already have 2 million announced and the 7 million target will be further reduced by the loss of Vanmarcke and others. On balance, I don't think they will exist next year, but the chance of them doing so is looking a bit better today than yesterday.

If they manage to survive they would then have a year to find a real sponsor.

Does anyone know if Slipstream Sports publishes their financials? or are we just to assume that they will spend this black box of cash in the most efficient and prudent way. (Maybe a big raise would be in order for the individual that thought up this scheme?)

My prediction is they don't raise over $200,000 though "crowdfunding" (even with the matching amount from the Fairly Group). In fact, I think it will be closer to $20,000.

Furthermore, as no legitimate corporate marketing plan is going to allocate $7M from their marketing budget within a 2 week period (marketing plans are typically developed over months and are often formulated during the overall budget process), JV needs to get on the phone ASAP and find a wealthy benefactor.

180k showing as raised at this point, so while I can't see anything close to 5 million being raised, it will be a significant sum.

What about dropping down a division? They would still get invites to many of the big races, especially if they can hang onto a nice core of riders who realize that they can still race big events.
You would think this would have to be an option even without Uran, Vanmarcke and a few others they would still have a team that would get invites to big races and give them a year to sort themselves out financially.

I suspect that deals with all existing sponsors are dependent on WT status.
Your suspect might be true, but maybe the sponsors would also realize that they will get nearly the same exposure, heck maybe more, so their investment is still fine. If they can keep RU, a TdF invite is pretty assured, and that is obviously the big one for sponsors.

Even if they lose Uran, ASO is not gonna keep Rolland out of the Tour de France.

But it's definitely gonna be WT or fold.

I don't think it's WT or fold, I think Vaughters would try and make sure something keeps going, be it at Conti level or whatever. But it would just be a virtually unrecognizable squad from what it is now; all the big names and WT-level talents will take other offers (including Rolland). The whole Exercise will pencil out completely differently.

Re: Cannondale-Drapac

Maybe there's another American-based/registered program that would benefit from C-D's collapse, in that they could make a bid for transfer of the WT license and buy-up necessary infrastructure on-the-cheap - without triggering the UCI's WT licence team dissolution clause (articles 2.15.009 et seq.).

Heck, maybe Slipstream's phantom sponsor actually still plans to invest in cycling, except by supporting the other team? That would be a twist!
