lets hope Gilbert continues to show kindness to taylor and not go nuts today. :p I think taylor will do well though as he has some really strong form.

Phinney should be on the front working for him!

I can see Phinney becoming a good classics rider. Guys like OGrady, Cancellara, Hincapie, and Boonen aren't good climbers. Boonen also isn't quite as fast as the true sprinters.

Lol.

If Gilbert refuses to drop him, 35 others will.

Boonen was arguably the fastest sprinter next to Petacchi in 2004-2006. The same period in which he won 3 Monuments, a few classics and semi classics and the WC.

McEwen was faster as well. But yeah, Boonen was a really good sprinter those years (although I don't think he ever loved it), it isn't untill the last couple of years that he has slowed down.

Nah, it's time for Taylor to work for his future teammate...although what does GVA think about all this love?

Break has 8 minutes, Veelers, Rasmussen, Fouchard and van Dijk.

124km to go.
Hmm, not sure if it's smart to let Rasmussen get ahead, particularly if they are caught late then Rasmussen would limit his time losses today and he's an excellent TTer.

The guys you mention weren't good climbers on mountains (except for Hincapie in some circumstances), but as long as I've known them they could handle short hills well.

Even in the U-23 stuff, Phinney just disappears with any uphill. He's more like how Cav was when he was coming up in regards to hills I think... I remember the early comments about Cav not even being able to handle a speed bump. Well that's what Taylor has been like so far.

Cav's gotten better obviously, but it's not like he can handle much in the way of hills even now. I don't anticipate Phinney being able to survive hills as well as Farrar to be honest, and it's not like he's a super climber.

If he COULD develop more ability in the hills, it would be beneficial. I'd think that would help with time trialing on tougher courses and it would broaden the races he could factor in. I just haven't seen a sign of that yet.

Hopefully I'll see something promising at this race.

i think he'll improve his climbing. He looked better on the climbs in austria and wallonie and his win in the ITT U23 worlds last year had some sharp climbs in there which wouldn't of suited him tbh.

Yeah, but he won that ITT by a miniscule margin. I got the feeling that if it had been flat he'd have crushed it. He pretty much lost a bunch on the climbs and made up a ton on the flats.

I think he will surprise as well. We have seen riders do the craziest stuff with a leaders jersey on earlier this year.

Strange that BMC, Sky and Lotto lets Rasmussen who's 4th in GC get in a break...

exactly he did pretty well on the hilly stage of wallonie. GVA can do well but will probably get beatened by gilbert.

I don't know if they wouldn't have suited him, but anyway in the RR he looked pretty strong in the hills too. If memory serves, he was among the first 10-15 riders over the top in the last lap.

The u23 version was ridden embarrassingly slowly though, way too many teams wanted a bunch sprint.

Well, you think of any other legitimate comment to use as an excuse to point out ACF's spelling mistake, and I'll consider it. :p

Yeah, ACF's grammar mistakes are pretty funny

it is quite said that you feel the need to pick up on a grammatical error. I would tell you to go get stuffed using some dirtier language but I'd get banned.
