Look, there's no reason to mock Phinney for this. He's never handled hills before and he isn't now. It's a fail when someone who should be able to hang on can't. It's not when a rider who's never been able to do anything but ride on flats fails on the hills.

Phinney is a flat rider with a great ITT. He's shown no ability to ever handle an incline well.

Yeah even a guy like Cornu is still in the 2nd group. 2 years ago Boom made mincemeat out of Cornu and Van Avermaet on a course like this, but now he can't handle hills anymore because he is more muscular. :
