"If you finish seventh or eighth on GC it's good, but if you finish tenth and win a stage it's better. It's important to keep trying, keep believing as Mathew Hayman keeps telling me," Chaves said.

I love this about him. Not just content with a top 10. He wants a stage win.

Well, Hayman is definitely a good person to take this sort of advice from. :D

Chaves isn't at the same level he was during the Giro. It's very difficult to be at the same level in your second GT of the season.
But good to see him attacking and chasing a stage win.

It may be possible that he is in top shape, like in the Giro , but in the Giro he fought a horrible Nibali, here he faces Quintana, Froome and Contador, easy to look weaker when the comparison term is higher in value.

I wonder how do you guys know tht he hasn't top shape at Vuelta.
Well, then I wonder how other posters know he is in top shape.
Speculation, of course. You can tentatively compare him to Scarponi and Valverde in order to assess his form. Both were worse than him in the Giro (I know Scarponi wasn't riding for himself, but still) and both are climbing better than him here.

One race day between the Giro and the Vuelta is a high risk strategy - Kruuswilk had two race days and was off the pace before he crashed out - Seems to be a touch below his Giro form but he is meeting stronger competition - Stage 14 may give a definitive answer..

Not so sure about Valverde though. He had altitude problems, but he was stronger in the MTT and at the end. And Scarponi isn't climbing better in this Vuelta..., yet

Great ride by him. Awesome rider. Hope he can get a bit stronger in next couple of years to truly contend with the big boys

Brave move, and it paid off. Orica played it well. Well deserved podium for Chaves.

Great ride by Chaves .............. and great team riding to set him up and support him. The latter is testimony, not only to the team ethos but also their level of belief in the little guy. Their decision to take a "punt" on him even after his 2013 accident is paying off in bucket-loads.

Showing once again that proper racing does work. Great ride and season by Chaves.

I was worried about the one race day between the Giro and the Vuelta but Chavez was strong in the last week, outside of the TT. Chavez will be popular in Australia during the summer.

Reminds me a bit of Aru, performing very well in Giro-Vuelta and a pretty aggressive rider, same age. I don't know who is the better of the two, but who cares - great ride! I like how Orica succeeded for the second time throwing riders out and joining them later - they did that in the Giro as well on Agnello. Awesome showing by Chavito and Orica!

Great ride, great team tactics, really good Vuelta for Orica, stage wins, 2 guys in the top 10 GC, a podium and they have to be happy.

3rd rider to make 2 GT podiums in 2016. He's not in bad company

I was actually about to post that - 3 riders making 2 podiums on one year. Pretty remarkable actually.
