Teams & Riders Everybody needs a little bit of Roglstomp in their lives

I've had this thread in my mind for awhile now. I've just been waiting for his first successful race/stage. 3rd place in a stage in Algarve isn't exactly what you'd call a big success, but with a bad shoulder (he dislocated it at TDU) it's a very nice result and a sign of good things to come.

This is a learning year for this young man. He is 26 but has the experience of a neo pro. Believe it or not, he bought his first bicycle in 2012. He is extremely talented and there's no doubt in my mind he can achieve some important results in the future. In a year or two I can see him fighting for a Giro podium. This year he is going to be a climbing domestic for Kruijswijk in the GIro.

I compared him to Landa because he can be this year's climbing sensation although in my opinion he won't reach the climbing level of Landa but he can become a better allrounder.

I can't wait to follow his improvement and his racing over the years. Discuss...

Re: The official Primož Roglič is the new Landa thread

Wow, that's really something. Ski jumping is.. very different :)
Hope he can shake things up in the GC every now and then!

Long time lurker - first post!

Re: The official Primož Roglič is the new Landa thread

I am on the bandwagon (bust just because he rides for Lotto-Jumbo)

now, I can´t remember when was the last time a rider from Blanco-Belkin-Jumbo was 3rd in a MTF stage (main group, not breakaway) :D

go Primoz!

Kruiswijk in the Giro last year?

yep, forgot he was 2nd behind Landa.
while behind Tiralongo he was second, but he was in a breakaway

Primož has been somebody who deserved the step up for a while now, he's shown great climbing chops in pretty much everything he's entered. A lot of ski jumpers also XC ski in their youth before specialising (you often get Nordic Combined athletes out of that) so it's quite possible he had some background in endurance sport from that, but obviously ski jumping was his modus operandi. He'd obviously outgrown Adria Mobil, and it's quite a pleasant surprise to see a Slovene talent in recent years not go to the top via Lampre. Lotto Jumbo is a gamble, but he should at least get a bit of freedom there. My hope is that he can impact his first GT in the Arredondo kind of way, don't ask him to do too much for GC but let him animate the mountains. He's got something, let him show it that way rather than hanging on to the rear of the favourites group until he's got a couple years' more experience...

When this man has showed something similar to Landa in Neila?
When has he raced against that kind of calibre field? Also, hard for him to show something like that so young; he's two months older than Landa, but when Landa did that amazing ride in Burgos, Roglič hadn't taken up cycling.

This is pretty useful, though admittedly he was probably peaking for his home race, while Nieve was coming off trying to peak for the Giro. Also there's Ulissi there; Ulissi is the same age as Roglič, but like Nieve he was already on a WT team by the time Roglič took up the sport. He was at the pointy end of anything hilly to mountainous that he entered last year, but also he was racing for Adria Mobil so there weren't too many races against high quality fields or on suitably mountainous parcours. Never underestimate beating the Iranian climbers either.

He's got potential. Give him a year or two to adapt to the WT.

Yes, that's the link I failed to connect.

Well , the man is strong, I have a friend who rode againts him in Quinkia Lake last year, but to put the new Lana thread he musst show something more...There is no point to compare both riders still.

There's a smiley in the title of the thread, you know.

With Contador so badly out of form that his season is over, and Quintana no longer the best climber even in his family, this Roglic kid is clearly the main threat to Froome in July.

You forgot Porte, who is accumulating energy reserves in his legs so he can do his best nuclear impersonation at Le Tour.

For now the plan is going good, lots of solar power created in Oman.

C'mon now, I am not suggesting he is on Landa's level. I was exaggerating a bit, I thought it was clear. I just think their climbing style is quite similar and I expect him to show something big in the mountains like Landa did last year and I'm sure he'll still show in the future.

Look at this video from Tour de Azerbaijan from 9:10 on: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYaojyG0crQ

I find it fascinating how raw he still is tactically speaking. Magnus Backstedt (one of the announcers) couldn't understand why he was constantly attacking his breakaway mate 35km from the finish when there was still a lot of flat from the top of the climb. Well he went alone and managed to hold the gap on the three chasers. Sure those were third level riders (although Chris Horner was one of them) but still quite impressive.

I'm curious to see his TT tomorrow. He should not do that well because coming from a continental team he obviously hasn't trained much on the TT bike. But given that LottoNL-Jumbo has had some good results in the past years, I think he should already show some improvement.
