Apearently today is a civic holliday in Massachusetts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriots'_Day

It could be a coincidence or it could not be.

The day it happened, where it happened, how it looks to have happened leads me to think about this:

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Thomas Jefferson

My thoughts are that this might be related to US millitia movements etc.

But thats just my immediate thoughts.

My cousin, who flew from Adelaide in Australia to run the Boston Marathon, just finished and moved out of this area about two minutes before the explosions. So glad she is safe, but so sad and sorry for the all those who have lost family and friends and for all the injured on what should have been a day full of joy and achievements.

Reportedly a suspect is in custody. He has shrapnel wounds so maybe a bomb he was setting went off prematurely.

Sounds odd, but possible.

Another explosion at the JFK Presidential Library, so it is a good bet that it will be a right wing, Tea Party-like loon rather than foreigners.

Yep, I think the efforts to implement some sort og gun control laws are a red herring for some of these people.

Didn't take long to make this political partisan game...wow.

In fact, a Saudi Arabian national has been identified.

Boston police nixed that, said there's no one in custody and no POI, although the FBI is not commenting. Not surprisingly, that story started with the NY Post, which also claims that there's 12 dead.

CBS is now reporting that the JFK Library incident may in fact be an unrelated electrical fire. EDIT: misread - their saying that it's "fire related", which could mean anything.

Imagine if I said, 'it is probably one of those terrorist Muslims'...there would be uproar on here.

Pipe down, girl. You don't even live here. You don't know what is like to reside among the right-wing loons who are convinced the end of the world is nigh and the socialists have "destroyed" America. You did not have to listen to talk shows where people called in after the presidential election, practically bawling, to complain that they could not believe the country they grew up in is gone. We have a home-grown bunch of nutters here that you cannot understand.

I am sorry to clue you in on this, but as an Aussie who fancies himself a conservative, you would be laughed out of the building as a RINO or worse by the "real" conservatives here.

You just assumed that the story about the Saudi was true - which, btw, is now being reported as "fact" all over the right-wing blogs even though at the moment no one has any idea who did it - how is that any different? Could very well turn out to be true, but right now you don't know that anymore than BroDeal "knows" that it's a TP loon.

But we do have a few clues. The bombing took place on Patriots Day and the JFK library was bombed. The Patriots Day timing may be weak evidence because an attacker would likely choose a large grouping of people and a big event on a holiday would be a primary target, but the JFK library is very interesting.

you do know that right wing nutjobs have commited atrocities like this in the US before? Considering they have done it before it makes sense to speculate that they, or Muslim fundamentalists, may be behind the attacks.

Though of course Muslim fundamentalists are extreme right wing too. It's just their apologists in the west that tend to come from the left.

And my first thought was of Timothy McVeigh. But it's way too early to know - there are reports that the FBI has a "suspect" in a Boston hospital and at the same time there's twitter photos of police arresting someone in a park. Just saying that it's pointless to speculate whether it was a TP loon or a Saudi national. We'll know for sure soon enough, I would imagine.

Very confusing about the JFK Library though, still not clear whether it was a bomb or not.

Whether it's right-wing nutjobs or Muslim fundies, it's political. It's always political.

FWIW, at least in U.S. history there's always the earlier part of the news cycle where there is a void to fill and someone fills it with allegations that some feared social/economic group had a hand in the event. At least in the U.S., there are a number of fear mongers that have large audiences.

Events like this are horrible enough without the fear mongers.

I'd also like to point out Law Enforcement has been embarrased in past high-profile situations like this rushed naming individuals to a national audience that turned out to have nothing to do with the event.

Patience from everyone is required.

Difficult to know isnt it? People arrested could fit a profile or have been caught on camera near the scene with a package or something. Also, someone could be guarded by police for their own safety in case someone decides that they must have been the bomber because of their ethnic profile, etc, and thats without knowing what data about anyone is true. I guess we'll find out in time, that area near the finish line would presumably have quite a lot of cameras.

The police have denied having a suspect in custody. They are evidently looking for a truck but there is no information on what type of why.
