Let's not make this an opportunity to bicker in political overtones.

There are lots of "ifs" right now.

Think or pray for those are dead or may or my be dying. Only that. I would encourage a time of silence.

The news people do their jobs. Stay informed, but don't let the the coverage lead you into passions that disrespect the dead and the dying and wounds that will only heal with time and love.

If you think I am preachy, I have also been tempted this day to think ill of factions that oppose my beliefs. Then I remembered that's one aspect of terror violence, and those carry it out, want to achieve.

I may awake tomorrow to find that I have convicted the innocent.

Just proves how easily accessible everyone and every event is. Really sad day today. Makes me worry about races/riders in races all over the world, & right here in the states. Be safe my friends.

My God! From which pulpit do you preach, sir, and on what authority? How is it in anyway "disrespecting" of the dead to simply ask who and what's behind it? It’s what the authorities are doing isn’t it? That this is either politically or religiously motivated cannot be denied, so let’s spare us all the hypocritical PC.

All this prosaic and moral lecturing instead of simply taking a hard and rational look at what has just taken place in America, to avoid political embarrassment, is baseness personified. And it is apparantly only coming from the conservative side. Just pathetic.

Apearently today is a civic holliday in Massachusetts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriots'_Day

It could be a coincidence or it could not be.

The day it happened, where it happened, how it looks to have happened leads me to think about this:

My thoughts are that this might be related to US millitia movements etc.

But thats just my immediate thoughts.

The holiday makes sense for that type of group as it commemorates the start of the Revolution (April 19th). The target, however, seems odd, as Massachusetts is one of only three states that celebrate Patriot's Day, and it was one of the iconic sporting days of the year. I'd expect right wingers to attack federal or at least government targets (as McVeigh did). This seems very much like an attack on Boston itself, and one poised to gain international attention, as the marathon is very competitive. The target at Harvard is famous for it's international affairs programs, and is very influential. This looks foreign to me. (I have no expertise, and the profile also fits a disgruntled New Yorker, jealous that their marathon got ruined by the hurricane, jealous of Harvard, and hating the Red Sox.)

You twist the words you put into my mouth. Sorry, but that was from the heart. Some were beginning to bicker. I found that troubling because I thought to reply in the same way. I held the thought.

How awful to have a moral thought or put into context how quickly concern and feeling flee?

Consider your vast conclusions. Your not inside my head and neither am I in yours.

Sounds like terrorists but they usually are quick to take responsibility for an attack. Might be some lunatic with a grudge against the city or someone in the government. Who knows ? Unfortunately many of the injured are critical. Very sad day. Appalling.

this was a a terror act. little doubt...

5 explosive devices timed to go off within seconds. luckily only 2 went off.

who/which group is behind the heinous act imo is an (important) question for later. any speculative analysis when little is known only create more confusion and division.

yes, sad day. and for the fans as well.

coincidently, i was going over my shots from a marathon in Paris yesterday and i was right there. i mean, i could have reached out and touched any number of runners.

there seems to be a symbiotic relation between the participants and spectators. a little boy near where i was was patiently waiting with a handmade sign that said ALLEZ PAPA. runners going by smiled as they saw it.

the fact that every body is so accessible, including runners pealing off and stretching right behind the crowds, is part of the whole ambiance. we are able to witness the joy, the agony, the spirit and determination up close. it draws you in, makes it personal.

what now?

breaks my heart.

Two bomb exploded. A least one unexploded device was found. All were on the same side of the street along the race route. The three were roughly a hundred meters apart. The course would have been swept with bomb sniffing dogs before the event. That indicates all three were probably placed while the race was ongoing by a single individual who walked the course, planting each as he went. The best strategy for multiple individuals would be to separate, which would mean either different sides of the street or different locations.

It is being reported that the bombs were small devices using a low grade explosive. That probably means pipe bombs, which anyone can make with materials from a hardware store plus gunpowder. Again an indication that it was probably one person.

The bombs probably went off shortly after being planted to reduce the chance of discovery. There is a good chance someone will report seing someone suspicious.

If the Patriot Day timing is a coincidence of convenience and opportunity then it could be anyone.

A domestic group is less likley because those are heavily infiltrated and surveilled by government agencies. So it likely to be a single domestic or a single foreigner.

Disturbing to hear and it's easy (and natural) to make assumptions and theories, as long as you don't act on these then there’s little menace.

In a recent Department of Homeland Security document it's written that "the extreme right in the US is gaining consensus playing upon fears and is radicalizing the conflict." In the final conclusion of the document it says "increasing numbers of citizens are embracing the ideology of the extreme right, which in this moment represents the most dangerous threat for acts of internal terrorism."

Consequently even the Gov. is aware of the problem, so let's not be a bad sport about it chap and take time to reflect about an in house disaster.

The so called "white ghettos," places which used to be the cradle of a middle class that hoped in the promise of the so called American Dream, now find themselves impoverished and excluded and are among the places where right wing extremism fosters. They are thus now the sepulchers of the neoliberal American hell.

Let's dispense with the hypocrisy please.

Everybody here know you are full of ****, but you've gone to new heights with your last few posts.

This may be the start of the revolution you are predicting.

I guess you'd know about that, Pat. :D

Scott, before you dump on the professor (edited attack, hiero2), I suggest you go and check some wingnut FB pages. I'd very much like to think that even you would condemn the currently rampant insanity there. According to most of them, Obama did this, Muslims did this (same thing), "libtards" did this, and now the evil vicious media is blaming honest Merikans to divert attention from the real perps. No rational person could dream this paranoia up.

fbi to hold a press-conference in 30 min..i sense we are to hear of some progress wrt to the investigation.

it must be. having a possession of at least one unexploded device, dozens of eye witnesses and the cell towers records in the vicinity of the explosions (either for bomb activation or coordination) should give some solid leads.

No real news on who or why. They are calling it the biggest crime scene in Boston history, and the most complicated case seen by Boston Police.

We are seeing more caution locally by news outlets. They learned something from 9/11.

But, what has come out has been the marvelous response of the general community to emotional and physical needs, and of the medical community to the medical emergency. There are people who will be dealing with this for years - a professional dancer lost a leg and the life she knows, an 8 year old child dead, among others. But of those injured, there has been a massive and rapid effort to save what could be saved. Emergency responders taking care of emergency first aid and triage. Doctors operating all day and all night. Hospitals coordinating, communicating, and sharing the load. And the community has stepped up to comfort when comforting is needed. Small rays of goodness from a dark event.

Gov Duval is now saying "2 and only 2 devices" were found, so apparently no third, unexploded one. Which may be why they have no suspects at the moment, either, as I'd imagine having an unexploded device in their possession would greatly assist the investigation.

Also looks like the Saudi dude or whoever it was in the hospital has been cleared of any involvement.

Edited indeed. Conversation seemingly going only one direction here, so I'll leave it to those with similar views.

What was up SoCal? Someone putting the edit hammer down?

There is rarely anything here that would require moderation.

Amsterhammer what happened? I'm confused? I just replied to one of SoCal's posts to ask him what was up.
No reason to go deleting or editing was there?

I did not want to rush in yesterday evening and post. I was more than a little shaken and was left trying to find the location of some former training partners. Of course I have my own thoughts about who is responsible and what should happen to them. I will just keep those to myself considering the overwhelming direction the current conversation here has taken.

Missed it all but like I said above. Rarely have I seen things that needed to be deleted or edited here in the Cafe. Most of the guys in here have been trading posts for sometime now.
