Totally hear you on that one, Susan. My two boys are now 16 and 12 and the thought of too much time in a car pretty much negates the idea of 'vacation'. ha.
As far as camping, I spent so much of my earlier years doing that , at this point in my life I like a shower every day and not sleeping in a rustley tent with bad night's sleep.
Hope the cabin thing works out...:)

It looks cool, but it is just too far away! :(

Its worth seeing if you are going by the town anyway, but it isn't worth a special trip. I was being facetious with my post about it.

even if you where driving past Mitchell, SD, it is still NOT WORTH stopping for the Corn Palace. The town itself has gone downhill in the last few years. Everything has moved away from the downtown and out toward the Interstate (I blame Cabelas, but it's not like there was much there anyway).

I booked the flights today, over the Delta page. Interestingly enough, the flights from DCA (I refuse to use the new name) are at significantly better times than those from Dulles.

That is the final big reservation to be made. Now I can start on the details -- fun! I love planning vacations!

We flew to Rapid City on Wednesday, and spent Thursday in Badlands NP. Beautiful! We stayed in a teeny tiny cabin -- the Honeymoon Cabin! -- in the park.

Today we are in Custer State Park. Lovely, but a bit of a letdown after Badlands.

Basically NOT thinking about pro cycling at all, which is lovely.....

Thanks for the update Susan. It's nice to hear how your trip ended up after the plans. :)

I can't believe flights in the States are so expensive, here in Australia I was able to fly from Sydney to Brisbane (a 90 minute flight) this year when arrived back from China for only $71 with Qantas. It's either them Virgin Blue, Jetstar (a subsidiary of Qantas, or rather Qantas created Jetstar to open up the no-frills travel market) and Tiger Airways (a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines). Tiger is the cheapest, but it's a case of you get what you pay for, CASA (Australia's Civil Aviation Safety Authority) grounded them for 6 weeks recently for a whole host of breaches (safety being a major factor), on that day I flew from Sydney to Brisbane they had a fare for only $39, but I didn't take that option as I wanted to catch up with a mate in Sydney for lunch.

I have flown all the airlines except for Tiger and I refuse to, as I stress like crazy when planes/buses/trains are late as I hate being late to anything.

Is there not a lot of competition to offer cheap flights?

in a nutshell No. Unfortunately there has been a huge reduction in number of flights, they have taken away many routes to save money. A few routes are competitive but for the most part the airlines can command high prices as the competition has been reduced to many airports.
A drag. :(

btw airlines here run late many times...ugh

We only have four airlines to choose from, but from a country and population of Australia I think that it is enough, whereas I guess that is not the case for America.
